IHSP Chicago Hostel at Damen Reviews
IHSP Chicago Hostel at Damen Jul 24, 2016
IHSP Chicago Hostel at Damen was one of the affordable hostels in Chicago. I have no clue how they can call hostels places that charge $50 for dorm bed… IHSP was alright for the price of $30 and 6 person dormitory. Chicago has fairly good transportation system and it is very easy to reach IHSP. I came with the train (my first US train experience) that arrived to Chicago Union Station. That station is only two block away from the blue metro line which luckily enough stops two blocks from the hostel… I love it!
Hostel is located, you guessed right, at Damen Street, which has great number of cool restaurants, stores and galleries. Hostel is adjacent to the Walgreens store that is in the old bank building. You do HAVE to go in that store and see the restored bank main hall and go in the basement where they have “vitamin vault” located in the real old vault…
Hostel is in the triangular three floor building and it occupies last two floors. They also have fantastic rooftop that NEVER closes down. I assume that during the winter in Chicago no one enjoys that option.
Entrance is a bit weird and you’ll need to call the reception from the interphone so that they let you in. Reception works 24h but when you get your room they give you card that lets you in the building. They have few cameras that cover the hostel entrances and every room has a code to get in, so security is very good.
Other amenities are large and good living room and hanging out area that is connected with spacious kitchen. They do have breakfast and you can make as many pancakes and fill them up with blueberries, raisins, nuttela, peanut butter or maple syrup. Showers are excellent and they have them on both floors. Bathrooms are clean and they did good thing by separating sinks from the bathroom, so that people do not hold on the restroom… Internet is very good all around the hostel, they do have TV and some DVDs. You will get the towel from them and you can wash your things on premises if you want to do that.
My dorm was a bit strange, with two small rooms connected but somehow no space for anyone… We had few large metal lockers, but I was the only one using them. Maybe other guys did not understand what is that for because they just dropped their stuff all over this small room (which happens sometimes when mom is not around). Bed was comfortable, with plastic cover against bugs and nice warm blanket, but there is an issue with bed frames. They are made of thinner frames and not tightly connected so beds are squeaking as soon as you move a bit. That’s very annoying if you have few people in the room and they all move a bit… All in all, it is very good place to stay, surrounded with all necessities and close enough to many attractions around the city.
