I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival Santa Barbara Reviews
Santa Barbara and the I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival Jun 15, 2015
I've been going to the I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival since the first one in 1986. Every year the asphalt in front of the Old Mission Santa Barbara is transformed into works of art over Memorial Day Weekend. The artists work tirelessly to create the artwork that can only be viewed temporarily. The next week the pavement is cleaned off and the area is used for church parking.
There is always free entertainment during the Festival. This year I thoroughly enjoyed a concert by Vincent & Vedant http://vincentandvedant.com/; they have a really unique flamenco guitar and gypsy violin sound.
There are a number of concession stands selling Italian delicacies, gelato, Italian coffees & sodas. it is a great way to spend the day, browsing the art, bumping into people you haven't seen in years, listening to the concert while people dance and lazily eat gelato and drink wine.
If you need a break, there are plenty of other diversions nearby: you can tour the Mission, enjoy the Mission Rose Garden, relax at Rocky Nook Park, visit the the Museum of Natural History Mission Creek or even walk along Garden Street to see the beautiful homes on Garden Street.
Santa Barbara has a very walkable downtown area full of arcadas, unique shops and excellent restaurants. For 50 cents you can ride the trolley to the waterfront.
There are a number of modern movie theaters, but I recommend the Arlington as the inside of the theater looks like the outside of Old Town Santa Barbara. The Granada and Lobero theaters were recently refurbished and are nice venues for concerts, plays, opera, etc, however, the seats in the Lobero are rather uncomfortable.
I Madonnari is one of the few festivals I would travel a great distance to attend. It is a feast for the artistic soul!
