Hyogo Udon Sakaide Reviews
Wonderful experience May 06, 2013
Since the island of Shikoku has the driest climat in Japan, it's ideal for growing wheat. Therefore udon (wheat noodles) is a speciality there. The Hyogo Udon is a famous udon place. In Japanese guide books it is consider among the top 10 udon places in Japan. Actors and TV personalities have gone there just to eat their famous udon soup. In the tiny restaurant the walls are full of autographs of famouse Japanese people.
Now you think this is a fancy place! It couldn't be further from it. It looks like a hole in the wall in a back alley. I don't think they have had any foreign guests before. I was stared at the whole time I was there.
This is a family business and I believe they live in the same house. The udon is made right there in the kitchen and you can watch them make it. When you enter you grab a bowle (3 diffent sizes) and they fill it with udon (wheat) or soba (buckwheat) noodles. Then you go to the next "station" and pick out what kind of topping you'd like. After you pay, you add the broth from a container yourself.
There are both outdoor seating on a long bench under a plastic cover and indoor seating on 4 tiny tables.
I had the soba noodles with fried chicken. It was really good! I would love to go back for more. Not just for the udon, but also for the local experience. When you're finished, you take your bowle to the old lady who does the dishes. By doing most of the serving and cleaning up yourlf they can keep the prices down. And I mean down. It's dirt cheap. My bowle with chicken and my friends bowle with vegetables cost 560 yen. That is about $5,50 for two lunches.
If you come at lunch time, be prepared to wait. It's is a popular place among the workers in Sakaide. Don't be surprised if the line goes all the way out to the street.
The Hyogo Udon is highly recommended! Bon Apetit!
Opening hours are 8:45 am - 2 pm or until the soup finishes. Sunday closed
