Hydrofoils to Vung Tau Ho Chi Minh City Reviews
Hydrofoils Sep 12, 2009
the hydrofoil is the quickest way out to the coast above the Mekong Delta, including the Binh Chau hot springs and the beach resorts just outside the city. It costs 160,000 VD one way.
ydrofoils are intrinsically cool. They are essentially boats on waterskies, and I have no idea how they work, unless they have some sort of water prooelled jet turbine thing going. The trip is a lot of fun in its own right, as you go past teh deep water moorings of the port (Ho CHi Minh has a port, but it is shallow water, and deep water vessles have to be loaded by barges further out). You also see lots of little fishing vessels and the islands. if you don't get a window seat - seats are allocated on numbers - then there is a tiny little deck you can stand on mid way up each side of the hydrofoil.
If you are travelling on a weekend, it is a good idea to buy your tickets in advance. The hydrofoils only run until 5pm and your only alternative is a minibus back along the coast. This is extremely tedious, as they keep stopping to pick up more people and it is far further by road. The 14 seat minibus we took back ended up carrying 21 people and took three times as long. ANd played Vietnamese stand up comedy on DVD the whole way home, which would be great if you speak Vietnamese well enough to get the jokes, but otherwise just stops you sleeping.
