Hyatt Regency Paris Etoille Oct 16, 2014
In all my time on TB and as a Hyatt fan, it pains me to write this negative review. On a recent vacation to Paris with my wife, we had what we thought was the perfect trip planned. We started by flying business class and thought that we would end up in a beautiful, chic hotel at a Hyatt Regency. I stay in other global Hyatts and would have no reason to be suspect that this property would be substandard. Boy was I wrong. From the start, we had a bad taste in our mouths. The concierge desk recommended that we take the Air France bus from De Gaulle; the bus stopped at every terminal at the airport and crammed as many people on as possible. The ride ended up taking about 1 hr 45 min; a cab ride would have taken maybe 45 minutes. I would think that a premium brand hotel would recommend against this service (or at least warn you about it). I digress, but spend the extra money and take a cab. When we checked into the hotel my impression of the lobby was that it wasn't as nice as I was used to and it looked old and outdated. Little did I know that sentiment would apply to rest of the hotel as well. After we received our room assignment (a club level room at that) we boarded the elevator to go to the 21st floor. When we got off on our floor, we found the hallway to be dark and dirty with badly marked walls and a style that would have made the Village People proud. The real shock was when we opened our room door though. The room showed many years of wear and tear, the carpets were stained, and the bathroom was straight-up obsolete and filthy. Talk about a buzz kill. At that very moment I felt a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that we chose our hotel very poorly. As a Hyatt fan, this was an utter disappointment. I called the manager and complained immediately. The theme of my complaint was that I was disappointed. They showed us a new room that was only marginally better. Finally they moved us to a room on one of the lower floors that had apparently been refurbished more recently than the higher floors which was not saying much, but at least it was acceptable. Of course accessing the club level amenities was now a challenge as we were no longer on a club floor; getting to the lounge took about 15 min and 2 elevator rides. I submit this review as a warning to other Hyatt fans out there who think that they are getting typical Hyatt Regency quality at this property; it is not the case. Don't be disappointed like I was. I would recommend either using one of the other Hyatt properties in Paris or go to a boutique hotel (which is probably the way to go anyway). As one last poke, the location of this hotel was pretty bad. It is about as far on the outskirts of Paris before you leave city limits; every site that we went to see was quite a hike away except for the Arc de Triomphe and Champs Elysee. I definitely would not recommend this hotel. In closing, and to Hyatt's credit, I submitted a formal complaint to Hyatt Corporate and they reimbursed me the cost of one night.
