What a come back Oct 28, 2011
I checked into the Hyatt 2 days after their grand reopening. This hotel was almost completely destroyed during hurricane Katrina and had been closed ever since. When I walked into the hotel I is beautiful and modern. The decor, the technology the amenities are all outstanding. Someone had to teach me how to use the elevator. Your key card gives you access to the big deal I've been in hotels like that uses that technology before, but this is something different. When you walk up to the elevator area, there are eight elevator doors labeled A-H. There are also 4 electronic displays where you scan you room key. The scan will automatically detect from your key which floor you are staying on and will display this info on the electronic display. The display will then tell you to go to elevator door A, B, C D etc. You go to whichever door it tells you, the doors open, you step in and then based on your key scan, the elevator will take you to whichever floor appeared when you scanned your card. All this without having to touch a button at all. Once you get to your room door, you just wave your key card in front of this little round electronic lock and it automatically unlocks your door...nice. The rooms are well appointed, nice views, comfortable beds and more technology. Everything from ordering room service, having your laundry picked up, delivering more towels, delivering a shaving kit etc are all done through your huge flat screen TV. The bathroom was nice, nothing spectacular. There's a tub and shower combo plush towels, nice sized vanity overall it was nice. There are no built in closets, but they use armoires instead which I really liked, but they were kinda small so if you have a ton of clothes to hang and shoes, they will not all fit in the armoire. There is a dresser also though for folded clothing, I believe there were only 3 drawers though. There is a mini refrigerator, but no microwave. Room service was pretty good, they close at midnight with selections from shrimp poboys sandwiches, build your own burgers, steaks, grilled cheese sandwiches with a bowl of tomato soup, BLT sandwiches, chocolate cake, berry pie, and many other selections including breakfast selections as well. There is also a really comfortable chaise lounge in the room with a side table that was a nice to have. All in all, I really liked the room, the bed was really comfortable with tons of complaints on the room for me. In the hotel there's also a Starbucks, a mini mart and a sushi bar/sports bar type of lounge and a restaurant. The lounge is really nice, each of the sitting areas, have their own flat screen TV. There's also a nice pool and gym area, but I never went to those areas so I really can't speak on those. Now for the bad stuff. I love Hyatt, and I would have given this hotel 5 stars, but the service was disappointing at times. I think they rushed to open the hotel and didn't properly train the personnel for one and some of the neat technology have tweaks that still need to be addressed. So the first day I arrive the bell hop took my luggage and key and was escorting me to my room showing me how the elevator works and so forth, but the key doesn't just will not scan. So we had to get workers to look at the key scan to figure out what was wrong. After that was fixed he scanned the key, but it took us to the wrong floor...remember I said the key automatically tells the elevator what floor to take you to so in this case the scan didn't work properly because it took us to the 20th floor instead of the 25th. Eventually we got that fixed and it never happened again, but on the last day I tried to scan my card to go to my room and it said the card was invalid which wasn't the case so I had to go all the way back to the front desk to get that fixed. Oh by the way, the elevators are no where near the front desk which is a pain especially in cases where you need to get a new key or something. You have to go up two flights on escalators, walk pass the restaurants before you even get to the elevators so tracking all the way back just to get a new key because without the key you can't get in the elevator was a huge pain. Also one night I ordered room service which included soup, first they took over an hour to bring me my food and when they did, they didn't bring me a spoon. They did send up a quart of ice cream as an apology which was nice. Also one morning I couldn't get the room service feature to work on the TV so I had to call room service and they had to read off all the options because they also do not put a paper copy of the menu in your room. That was a pain for me and the rep who had to read the entire breakfast menu to me. Also I ordered laundry pick up on Sunday, they didn't deliver my clothes until Tuesday and when they did I was missing items. I tried to call to see where the other items were, but the phone wouldn't work so then I had to use my personal cell phone to call the front desk to ask them to transfer me to guest services, but they transferred me to Valet instead. I asked Valet to transfer me back, but he said I would have to hand up and dial number option #7 which then I told him I would do no such thing. So then he finally tries to transfer me, but the line goes dead and I have to call back again. Now I furious. I immediately ask to speak with the manager and I go down the list of everything that has gone wrong since I've checked in and he apologizes profusely and says that all stops with him. He sends up someone to fix the phone, he locates my missing laundry and sends that up, he sends up a big basket of fresh fruit and two bottles of water with a hand written card apologizing for any inconvenience and he removes 1 night charge. I checked out the next day without any glitches, they even sent me to the airport in a limo. Also, the concierge and front desk representative were all very nice and healthful as well. The next time I'm in New Orleans, I will be staying at the Hyatt again. It's a great hotel and will be 5 stars once they iron out all the tweaks and get the customer service up to Hyatt standards.

This really does sound like a great hotel. Hope they get those little glitches taken care of. They would drive me nuts. But that ice cream was a super gesture! :)
