Hveragerði Reviews
Hveragerði - Good campsite but strange village! Jul 01, 2008
The small campsite at Hveragerði is quite commercial but useful as it is close to Reyjavik but away from the city.
Hveragerði is a small town and located 45 km to the east of Reykjavík on Iceland's main ringroad, Route 1. Turn left at the roundabout onthe 1 and head into the village and the campsite is leftside in the village. The site is clean tidy and well looked after. The owner friendly and speaks good english. Some good facilities ... clean and tidy and decent prices makes it a good recommend. The surrounding area is part of the Hengill central volcano, and is geothermally active and experiences frequent earthquakes. The last substantial and you can see cracks on the walls of the campsite buildings! The town is known for its greenhouses, which are heated by hot water from volcanic hot springs. An infrequently erupting geyser, Grýla is at the entrance of the Ölfusdalur valley. The borehole Leppalúði on the way to the Gufudalur valley erupts continuously, reaching a height of 10-12 meters - this has been interrupted since the last earthquake! Close to the church is a hot spring called Sandhólshver, formed during the violent South Iceland earthquake of 1896. A fenced-off geothermal area in the town has numerous hot springs and fumaroles. To the south of Hveragerði, there is the small port of Þorlákshöfn, point of departure for the ferry to the Westman Islands. The tourist office here was next to useless be warned!
