Hutton Lodge Penang Reviews
Really good place to stay at such cheap price Nov 23, 2014
Located near the historical part of George Town, Hutton Lodge is about 10 minute walk from the KOMTAR building, on Hutton Lane. And walking distance to some of the attractions, and near some nice eateries. This place has both dorm rooms and private rooms. This review will be about the dorm rooms only.
The building of this place, looks more like a bungalow, than an actual hostel, with the way it is set up. And has some history, as it was named after Dr. Hutton, one of the earliest doctors in Penang.
The staff are really nice and helpful, with 24-hour reception. Plus the hostel accepts credit card (a method of payment not often found in this part of the world).
There is internet computer, and free WiFi. And breakfast is included, but very basic, as it was just toast with butter. It was okay. There is a lounge area with TV, and cafeteria area, where you can buy drinks and ice cream.
When I was there, I was fortunate to have the dorm room all to myself. But if all the beds were used, then I can see it being really cramped, as the room is small. And in the one with 3 beds, they are close to each other.
The hostel does have lockers, which you can store your things, both inside and outside the room. I think you are given a key for the lockers, but I don’t remember for sure.
Also, you are also given a remote for the air-conditioner. Believe me, if you have not gotten used to the hot climate of Southeast Asia, you will definitely need it. And only the rooms have air conditioning, but the rest of the building does not. So a huge difference between the room and hallway.
There is only one bathroom in the building, and it’s unisex, meaning both males and females can use it. There are toilets and showers in there. Also, you will have to take your shoes off, and use one of the colorful slippers by the entrance, to go in there. The bathroom is clean, and the shower stall is big enough. Though there are only 2 shower stalls, so that can be a problem during the busy season.
Overall, I think it was a very nice place to stay, and at such cheap prices in a very good location. I would not mind staying here again.
