Wikipeida: The word hutong comes from the Mongolian hottog meaning water well. During the growth of towns and cities, wells dug by villagers formed the centres of new communities.
Nowadays hutongs are vibrant neighbourhoods packed with shops and restaurants and were locals enjoy their food. For a taste of real china go to the hutongs before the government demolishes them all and eat some local food if you dare (but not a Chinese burger). Best one is located just south-west from Tiananmen square. |

It took us through the city to some of the major tourist destinations, but what we really wanted to see was the Hutong, a traditional Chinese city area, which was included on the tour.
