Peace and Quiet Apr 01, 2010
Hunter Valley YHA is a very quite, layed-back, and off the path type of place. It's close enough to Cessnock for a short walk, but is far enough away for the quiet of the outback.

The hostel is surrounded by pastures and vineyards, amongst soft-rolling hills. Brunbies play in the adjacent pastures and rabbits run rampant around the hostel at the twighlights. Only a few kangaroos come about, but there are plenty to see along the way to the hostel.

The hostel has an awesome wet-rock sauna right next to the bricked pool area. There's a few bbq areas, and a game room with a pool table, dart board, tv and wet bar (bring your own beer). The common area has a good tv, DVD's, and pretty a nice sitting area, with a big kitchen and two sinks. The laundry facilities worked ($3 per wash and per dry). There is wifi throughout ($0.75 per 15 min, or discounts for 24 hours of access).

The hostel owner, Nigil, offers wine tasting tours, as well as access to other activites, such as skydiving, horseback riding, hot air ballon rides and flying. But, in my opinion, all of these were a bit overpriced and not worth it.

This is a hostel to go to when you just want to relax with peace and quite. The crickets are quite loud in the evenings, and the pathes could be paved (they're soft and partly muddy in the rain/drizzle). But the character and cleanliness of the rustic-felt buildings and and area are impeccable and I would definitely stay here again.
