Hunawihr Vacation Guide

Classified as one of the "most beautiful villages of France”, the small village of Hunawihr is a worthwhile stop. Just outside the village, the 12-acre Store and Otter Center is more than an interesting tourist attraction, it’s devoted to resorting and preserving the once-endangered stork population, so integral a part of Alsace. Up on the hill, St. Jacques church is surrounded by a fortified wall. Perhaps more interesting is that it serves both the Catholic and Protestant communities!

When we visited it first, in 2002, we found the village itself drab and depressing. It seemed there was very little color and bullet pock-marks from WWII were still visible in some of the buildings. However, by the time w returned only three years later, Hunawihr had been transformed into a truly beautiful village with virtually all of its half-timbered houses boasting bright colors and fresh woodwork. The transformation was stunning.
