Hummer "Red Rock" Tour Ripoff Travel Reviews

Feb 09, 2006

My wife and I had previously taken a Pink Jeep tour in Sedona which was awesome. The jeeps go up on the red rocks on the most gorgeous trails imaginable. Vistas, stops, scenery and thrills too. All close to downtown sedona. The kids were enamored to try the macho Hummer tour the second time we went. Big Mistake! It costs more, for starters. They promise this tour called the "Jeep Eater' which is presumably super rugged. The brochure shows a Hummer up against the Red Rocks (as you really do on the Pink Jeep Tour) -- only the Hummer folks don't have access to the best trails, given forest service regulations. So they take you 1/2 hour out of town, in a freezing, open air Hummer, then spend much of the next 1/2 hour going through boring ranch land on a dirt road. Still no adventure. You are MILES AWAY from the true beauty of Sedona Red Rock Canyons in crappy, scrubby ranch land. Not nearly as scenic as Pink Jeep. Finally, you reach "the jeep eater" portion that the Jeep can't handle. Funny, I wasn't told we had a boring one-hour ride to get to the "thrill." But wait, it gets better: The thrilling portion is a utlility service road under power lines!!!! Yes, very rugged, but also very UNSCENIC. And really, only one portion of the ride was at all exciting. And it lasted 5 minutes. Your driver turns to you and says, "A jeep can't do that!" One little moment out of a two-and-a-half hour ride. Then you drive an hour back through the ugly ranch land and the freezing highway to get back to where you thought you were vacationing. Sedona!!!! Horrible. We asked for a refund of some sort, they told us to write out our complaint, and then never contacted us to respond. Stay away. Take the Pink Jeep Tour over the Broken Arrow Trail and you will be far happier.

Thanks for the tip. Nothing scenic about power lines!

wrldadventurer says: This area of Arizona is amazingly beautiful! These red rocks seem to have something spiritual about them. They are truly absolute peace. If you need some time away and want to have some peace in your life Sedona is a great place to go! If you need some TLC, go to one of the many spas for a treat...
jenn79 says: I thought this would be a meathead, lame, cliche tour, but I was SO wrong. They have some pretty crazy tours, including the Broken Arrow where you go down some sort of staircase in a Jeep. With my back issues recently, I opted for the tamer tour of the Indian Ruins. Plus I've been dying to see ruins...
