Night Club in Valpo Mar 05, 2011
When I was studying abroad in Vina Del Mar, every week there was a group from school that would take the metro about five minutes into the next town over called Valparaiso, or Valpo for short. This is on of the famous culture hot spots in Chile. You can learn about government and art and the whole city attracts all different types of tourism. At night, though, the place to go is HUEVO. Yes, we know, it means egg. However, walking inside this club will make you completely forget about why they would name it that. The place is huge with four floors of entertainment. Once you get in through security, which treats everyone the same and does not work like America and let in hot girls first, and pay your cover, which is only about four dollars, you make your way into the first bar area. This is set up more like a traditional bar with tables all around and a stage for a live band. The music in this room tends to stick to rock or mainstream, and if there is not a band, then there are televisions on the wall to play music videos for you. Moving along you have the choice to go up or down. If you go downstairs you will find a more pool hall like atmosphere. Down in the basement you can check your coat and listen to the ska band that is playing or other like type of band that they bring in that night. If you decided to go upstairs then you can go left or right when you get there. If you go right you will find a dance floor jam packed with people busting moves to reggaeton music or drinking at the giant square bar that they have. If you go left then you will see a completely different type of crowd dancing to techno music with strobe lights and emissions from the fog machine. Finally, if you go upstairs to the patio you can, of course, find another place to buy a drink or dance to salsa music on the open patio. It's absolutely beautiful to dance to latin music underneath the stars, and they even have a whole section of the roof full of tables and couches to mingle with new Chilean friends. This club attracts people from all over, but if you are looking for a packed crowd, make sure to ask which nights to go. We have been in there where we walked right in and danced in half empty rooms, but there are only a couple of weekday nights like that. Usually, if you don't get there early enough, you will be stuck waiting in the line that wraps all the way around the building. Don't even think about trying to cut, because they have security watching to make sure everyone waits their turn. You won't get bored, though, because locals will walk up and down the lines selling everything from gum to soda to ease your wait. If you are looking for a diverse night experience with lots of people, this is definitely the place to go. The metro is the easiest way to get there, but after the metro closes down there are lines of buses waiting to take you home right outside of the club. I would suggest taking a bus as close to your lodging as possible, and if necessary, take a short taxi ride from the bus stop to your house. Walking around by yourself at night, especially in Valpo, can be dangerous if you are a foreigner, because you will be the target of petty thievery. We have, though, never had any issues with any of our belongings inside of the club. We met a lot of new people, and had a lot of great experiences!
