Huayna Potosí La Paz Reviews
Easiest 6000er in the world - not for us though Feb 19, 2011
We don't have any mountains in Denmark. We barely have a hill. So when my boyfriend and I read about this "easy" mountain just outside of La Paz, we wanted to climb it. On the first attempt, we only made it to a car park at 4700m, Zongo Pass. The weather was really bad - rainy with no visibility - so we went on a trip to Salar Uyuni, and arranged to make another attempt a week later. The following week the weather was perfect. We arrived at the car park and from there we hiked for 2 - 3 hours up to the high camp at 5200 m on the snow line. There the guide set up our tent, fed us the most horrible spaghetti dish ever and told us to go to sleep. He would wake us up at midnight where we would embark on the climb to the summit.
At midnight we put on our frosty boots and started walking up the glacier, the guide leading our way. It wasn't as much fun as I thought it would be. Or as easy. After an hour or so, all I could do was concentrate on one foot at the time. Right foot. Left foot. Right foot... - And we hadn't even reached the ice-wall-climbing part. After two hours my boyfriend was coughing so badly that the guide was afraid he was suffering from altitude sickness. So we turned around and teetered back to our camp. A blessing in disguise seeing as I am pretty sure we were in no shape to make it all the way, had we continued (and my boyfriend was fine - it was just a cold). Even though we totally underestimated the mountain and our own strength - and didn't make it to the top it was an awesome experience.
