Amazing experience for the eco-friendly traveler Jul 06, 2011
The Huaorani Ecolodge is situated on the Shiripuno river in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon. The lodge was created by Moi, the leader of the Huaorani's, as a means of income for his people that would still allow them to protect their land and culture. The lodge is run by the Huaorani's themselves, with the aid of several guides/translators of various backgrounds. The lodge consists of only six cabins, as it's supposed to be a very intimate experience that leaves the rainforest as undisturbed as possible. The cabins were very clean and in great condition, with running water and solar powered electricity (although no hot water). The meals were delicious! The days were spent hiking to nearby communities to meet with members of the Huaorani community, as well as to waterfalls and other beautiful landmarks. Highlights of the trip for me included a night hike followed by a canoe ride under the stars, as well as learning about the traditions of the tribe and how they are fighting to maintain their culture. The activity schedule is flexible depending on weather and the tourist group. I think it would be more fun for people who are in decent shape, as some of the hikes can go on for over six hours. Overall, an amazing experience, and I absolutely recommend the lodge to anyone who is interested in a trip to the Amazon.
