How to use public transportation in Budapest Mar 22, 2011
Budapest, capital of Hungary is well known for its historical buildings, museums and thermal spas.

Usually all these places are easily accessible by using some means of public transportations.

As the public transportation network of Budapest is a bit complex, let me just mention some of the most important.

Tram nr. 4, 6:

The mostly used transport of Budapest, the tram 4 and 6 share the same track, differing only at one of their ending stops. Both of their tracks start at Moszkva Square, and by crossing the Margaret Bridge (from where you can enter Margaret Island) it takes you through the Pest side before crossing the River Danube on Petőfi Bridge. During the ride this tram can take you to several transportation hotspots, like: Nyugati Square, Oktogon, Blaha Lujza Square and so on.

Subway (underground) 1, 2, 3:

Also known as Yellow (1) Subway, Red (2) and Blue (3) subway. These three are the fastest method to travel across the city, and take you to the most recommended places of Budapest. They have 1 common stop: Deák Ferenc Square, on of Budapests most visited transportation hotspots (also visited because of the buildings, and the famous Váci street can be accessed only by walking some 100-200 meters).

Cogwheel railway:

A unique means of transportation in Budapest. I'm recommending it not because it can take you to multiple places like the subway or tram 4, 6, but because of the sight it presents about the city, while traveling to Buda Castle. It is breathtaking even for me, although I've been living here since I was born.

Of course these are not the only methods of public transportation, but listing all of them would make this review endless.

So I'd rather describe the tickets and seasonal tickets available, since I believe you don't want to pay an unnecessary amount on travelling, but spend it rather on gifts for your dear ones:

Tickets (in 2011):

-Short section metro ticket (260,- HUF)

Valid on the subway (underground / metro) for one trip up to 3 stops for 30 minutes after validation. It does not entitle you for interruption of the trip or for return trip. Within time of validity you can change lines within the metro network (lines 1, 2 and 3) but it is valid only for 3 stops altogether (i.e. 3, 2+1 or 1+2 stops).

-Single ticket (320,- HUF)

Valid for one uninterrupted trip without change on any transportation vehicle within the administrative boundaries of Budapest. During the time of validity you can change lines within the metro and underground network (metro lines 1, 2 or 3). It does not entitle you for interruption of the trip or a return trip. You can use them for 60 minutes after stamping, on the night service for 110 minutes.

-Transfer ticket (490,- HUF)

Besides change it does not entitle you for interruption of the trip or for return trip. The ticket has to be validated twice when you start your trip at one end and when you change at the other end, with the exception of changes between metro lines (metro lines 1, 2, 3). When validated with stamping machine it is valid for 90 minutes (on night services for 110 minutes), within this for 60 minutes after second validation.

-Budapest Card 72h (7.500,- HUF)

Budapest Card can be used by an adult and a child up to 14 years travelling together. It is for personal use and it is not transferable. The card is valid for 72 hours following the time and date stamped on it. It can be used for travelling within the administrative boundaries of Budapest.

As you can see, the Budapest Card is more expensive, then the other passes. This is because these cards are not only for the public transportation, but also provide you free entries in to museums and other similar facilities, as well as provides discounts at other places.

Regarding the Budapest Card, I recommend to visit the following site:
