Metro in Rio de Janeiro Apr 22, 2011
Riding the metro in Rio de Janeiro is actually very easy. There aren't many stations. Take a look on the map:

Most of what you want to see in Rio de Janeiro is easily accessible through one of the stations betwenn Ipanema (far bottom, orange line) and Botafogo.

You can find cheaper hotels and hostels up near Gloria and Catete. I don't recommend any place near northern/western stations just because you will be a bit far from the main sights. From Gloria to Ipanema it takes about 15 minutes on the subway.

If you're taking the subway from and to any station between Ipanema and Gloria, don't worry with different lines. Just look at the signs so you're on the right platform side. Whatever line stops there is good for you.

PLease notice that if you're going from Gloria to Ipanema and get the green line (there are green lights on the side on the subway and LCD's on the platform with the direction of that train) you can only go up to Botafogo. From there just wait for the orange line train. This one goes up to Ipanema. The map is pretty clear about the stations "shared" between the two lines.

One way metro ticket costs R$2.80 ( ) and it is open Mon/Sat from 05:00/Midnight; Sun/holidays from 07:00/23:00. Further info METRO RIO Only the lines 1 (orange) and 2 (green) are actually underground (ask for the number: nobody cares about the colour here), the others are done by shuttle buses, using the same ticket. Passes cost the same as the individual tickets, may not save you money but saves a lot of time, if you get the metro with a lot of frequency you should buy a pass.

There is a pass that is accepted in both buses and ferry and can be purchased at any Unibanco`s bank agency, ask for RIOCARD ( Its also possible to buy a pass only valid at the Metro, ask for Cartão Pré-Pago (from BRL10,00).
