I took Amtrak from San Antonio to Alpine. Round trip coach $100. Good people work on the train. Lots of leg room and you can get up and walk from car to car. The windows are great. It is quite relaxing to take the train. The Alpine station is nothing to see, but the town is very interesting and laid back. Scenery abounds in Alpine and on the trip there.
