How to get a free hotel upgrade anywhere in Mexico Aug 11, 2010
As a travel agent I always tell my clients to ask for a 'free room upgrade' upon checking in.

It never hurts to ask, and if the hotel is in its slow season, or shoulder season (in between slow and busy season) they may accommodate your requests.

Think about it, referrals are the most effective way a hotel gets new clients (especially in this day and age/where good reviews of hotels can bring them in business/just as bad hotels can cost them business.

If you have booked the hotel prior to departing, try and email them before hand, especially if you are celebrating a wedding aniversary, birthday etc.

As a travel agent, I always play my 'travel agent card' but even if you are not a travel agent you can always use other simple methods.

If you work for a large company, bring your business card and explain to the front desk manager your company is always looking to hold events outside of the country. If you are a golfer or belong to any sports, church or social groups, play this card and tell them if you have a great vacation you will be referring their hotel. You would be surprised at how often this works.

Finally if you are checking in at the front desk, don't be afraid to ask for the front desk manager and just ask him point blank for a free upgrade. You would be surprised at how many times this has worked for me.

When booking in advance, always ask for rooms on high floors and close to the beach (especially if you do not have a walking disability) Higher floor rooms are always quieter, provide more security and do not get affected or flooded during the rain and hurricane seasons.

And on one last note always bring your own pillow covers, yes bring your own pillow covers. They take up very little room and will provide you with protection against germs from the previous guests who used the same pillow before you.

Remember, never be afraid to ask for upgrades or anything at a hotel that will make your stay enjoyable ;o)
