A moving house Jan 28, 2013
Hi there

If you love to explore the local life or like to have a day just for you(and partner or group) and nature, then house boats are a great choice. And if you are a bunch of people exploring the area(Alleppey) then its a good way to have a group chatter and enjoy nature at same time.

A house boat is a slow moving barges (so called 'Kettuvallam' in local language Malayalam) which are now used for leisure trips. [An interesting info about Malayalam - its a long palindrome]. When I say slow moving, they are being pushed by people, and a motorised version is also there.

The best part of houseboat is that you can enjoy the landscape as you move slowly and can not bother to get back to your accommodation, as you can stay in the boat itself, which saves time traveling to and fro and then if you want then you can catch fish from the lake and have it cooked in the Kitchen of houseboat itself.

And if you are passionate about rains, then you can enjoy a torrential rain during the monsoon, then have some spicy fish just to tickle the taste buds before sleeping on the water under a galaxy of stars(if you are daring).

The payment can be from medium to expensive depending on the houseboat (old ones cheaper). They can be booked from the District Tourism Promotion Council pre-paid counters or also be arranged by private owners. And it could be hired for a day by a couple or a group. It could have a single or double bedroom(for couples) or bunk(for groups).

Hope this information will give you a detail and as a rule of thumb do not book the boat unless you have seen it yourself. Agents can give wrong information to promote their boats.

Have a great stay.

Cruising the backwaters on a houseboat May 07, 2009
Need to relax? Rent a houseboat for a day. We left at noon and slowly cruised down a river until 6pm. We saw the locals do their business and the kids were excited to see us. The crew of three men, cook, captain, and engine guy, were quite friendly. I do recommend renting a houseboat for a night but it can be expensive. (4000 rupees, $100 US) The boat was fantastic. It had a lounge area with wicker chairs, two nice bedrooms, with a shower and toilet. Some even have AC and a TV. It was an awesome experience!
