Gables fun Aug 14, 2012
It was our first trip to Salem and my mom really wanted to go to the House of Seven Gables - it was number one on her list. We trekked down to the Pickering Wharf and found it down outside of town a little bit and took our tour which was in two homes. The house was really neat and they did a good job with the presentation of the rooms. My favorite part was the tiny hidden staircase that only one person could go up or down at once. My advice is to avoid this if you are a bit heavy ...its quite embarassing when you try to go up and can't. Or if you are claustrophobic it's definitely not good - seek an alternate way upstairs. Not trying to be rude - just looking out for anyone with those issues. The rooms and what the tour guide said was really perfect for the home, we learned quite a lot though now I don't really remember. I bought some lovely tea from the gift shop - it's a bit expensive in there, but they have a plethora of things to purchase available. I would do it again for sure.

Best of luck and have fun - check out the Wharf while you're there. I got great pictures of old style homes right next to it.

House of the Seven Gables Dec 29, 2008
All in all, not too bad. Very educational. It cost $12 to visit the House of the Seven Gables, along with Nathanial Hawthornes birthhouse and the counting house.

It is a guided tour with a group. The tour guide is very enthusiastic and informed. He was very helpful in answering everyones questions and even used my niece and nephew as his assistants. They are 6 and 7, so this was very helpful in getting them interested in the tour.

There is a lovely garden in the courtyard of the houses and it is located right along the coast so it is a beautiful scene to see.
