Admiring the House of Seasons Oct 02, 2017
I saw this house on my way to Dzyga Arts Gallery. This house at 23 Armenian Street enjoys great popularity among the visitors too. This building houses Lviv National Arts Academy now. It dates back to the first half of the 19th century. It’s a four-storey house with an outstanding facade.

We have repeatedly heard from our city guides that you should walk around the city with a high-raised head. And this is true, because otherwise we deprive ourselves of the opportunity to see countless interesting plots on the facades of Lviv's houses.

You can see symbolic depiction of seasons, Zodiac signs and the image of Chronos – the God of Wind. The Ukrainian sculptor Gabriel Krassutsky created those bas-reliefs in 1882 and depicted people’s customs and endowed his bas reliefs with humor. Corinthian pilasters support the frieze, where we find bas-reliefs of storks, wind masks on the four sides of the world as well as all zodiac signs. We admired the bas-reliefs depicting allegorically the four seasons of the year and the Roman god of Saturn, who is associated with the idea of a "golden age". The amazing allegories of spring, summer, autumn and winter reproduce the activities of farmers during the year. Every season is decorated with inscription in Latin, taken from the work of the ancient Roman poet Virgil "Georgica". This is the only architectural monument in Lviv, where the theme of life and life of peasants is embodied. http://1256.lviv.ua/budinok-pir-roku-na-vulitsi-virmienskij/

The inscriptions read,

“Ver" - "SPRING": « Ergo age terrae/Pingue solum primis extemplo a mensibus anni/Fortes inuertant tauri » - "Do not lose your time and let the strong oxen plow the fertile fields”.

“Aestas" - "SUMMER": « At rubicunda Ceres medio succiditur aestu/Et medio tostas aestu terit area fruges » - “When it is very hot, it is time to mow the wheat”.

“Autumnus" - "AUTUMN": “Et varios ponit faetus autumnus et alte/ Mitis in apricis coquitur vindemia saxis”. - “And autumn brings different fruits, and high / On the rocks warmed up by the sun, the grapes are baked ".

- "Hyems" - “WINTER": “Frigoribus parto agricolae plerumque fruuntur/Mutuaque inter se laeti convivia corant” - “In cold weather the peasants live by their harvest and have feasts”.

There is an image of Saturn in the middle of the facade, with an anscription, “Aureus vitam in terris Saturnus agebat”. – “This is how Golden Saturn was consoled by the golden earth on the fertile ground."

The image of Chronos leaning against a hemisphere is very attractive indeed. The hemisphere serves as a sun clock. Unfortunately, it does not always operate due to the changeable and rainy weather in Lviv.
