First of all, nearly everything is negotiable in Thailand, including room rates, always ask to see the room first, its usually a good idea to book a hotel before you arrive for 2-3 nights, if you like it, stay on, if not then look around and see if you can get better deal, when booking in advance, use the internet, you will usually get better rates than direct with hotel. When staying in a hotel, don't leave valuables in your room, most Thai's are honest, but some will steal from you, don't give the bad apples a chance, if you want anymore info, message me, I lived in Bangkok for 3 years (out of 6 years total in Thailand)

thanks for the info. Im planning of going to Bangkok next month. Could you recommend a hotel, one that is not expensive but with good facilities? For night life what place would you recommend.
