St. Barbara - a nice hotel in the center of the Estonian capital Jun 08, 2010
I landed in Tallinn/Ülemise at midnight in late June, just days before the sommer-solstice, that is why the light was absolutely astonishing, I watched the most spectacular sundown ever so far in my life. The sun descended slowly into the Baltic sea, painting a work of art across the evening sky in a hundredthousand shades of red.

From the airport all you have to do is take bus number 2 to the city centre, change to the tramway and get off at Vabaduse Väljak, one of the most important inner city plazas, just were the Independence Memorial is situated. From there St. Barbara Hotel is just a step away. At night, entry to the nice renovated limestone-building is only permitted after talking to the receptionist via intercom at the entrance, which gives a first impression of security-concern.

Check in was very uncomplicated and friendly.

My room was very clean and the furniture in good condition. As I said before, St. Barbara is situated in a limestone-building which tremendously adds to the pleasant atmosphere.

The beds were very convenient - I slept like a baby. :->

Breakfast is being served downstairs in the "Baieri Kelder" -Bavarian Cellar- a sort of Disney-World Bavarian-German style like motto restaurant, which you'd surely expect in Magic Kingdom, Orlando. The waitresses are dressed in Bavarian "Dirndl's" (dresses) and have to arrange their hair pig-tail style like. You are being seated at heavy wooden tables, For me it was kind of amusing, since I had arrived in Estonia coming from Germany. The breakfast-buffet is quite rich and nearly everything is being served what is needed for a continental breakfast.

The -Baieri Kelder- is open to the public at noon and from what I've heard it is one of the well known restaurants of the capital. I didn't try it out by myself however.

Tbe service at the reception was brilliant, Info was provided in a very friendly way and I recommend to get the brochure "Tallinn in my pocket" from the reception. Normally it costs € 2,50, here you get a complimentary copy. First I thought it to be once again another touri-ad-magazine, but in fact it is written very nicely and informatively, updated every month or so and they even warn about rip-off shops, bars, etc.

Having St. Barbara as a base, it is no problem to explore the Old Town and the whole inner city by foot. Public transport brings you anywhere within the city limits and beyond.

You reside close to everything what is essential in the capital, but you don't feel like an "all-inclusive-tourist" there. That's what I liked the most about this hotel. Should you plan to go to Tallinn, I definitely recommend this price-worthy middleclass hotel! Check out their rates!
