Affordable modern budget hotel for Geneva Jun 30, 2014
N46°12.836' E6°8.114' Geneva is known for many things, but affordable hotels is not one if them. Our task was to find a reasonable priced, modern and clean hotel with no bad reviews online, four months in advance. The best options within our budget were already fully booked. We opted for extension of our budget.

The Ibis offering gave us an airline feeling. They quoted different prices on the Ibis website, by telephone and in e-mail from the hotel reception. Reception couldn't offer the same price as the price of 126 euros including breakfast on Ibis website. Very strange and reception just made a joke about it when not accepting our booking for 126 euros. Ibis, don't play games with different prices for the same room on the same dates in the same hotel. Don't fool your Internet savvy customers!

Arriving at Geneva Airport, passengers are entitled to complimentary use of public transport within the canton of Geneva for up to 80 minutes. The free tickets are dispensed from a machine in the baggage collection area at Arrivals. From there, we walked for a few minutes to Genève-Aéroport train station and 7 minutes later arrived at the main train station of Genève, Gare Cornavin. Opposite the train station we boarded bus 8 in the direction of OMS and got off at bus stop Rue de la Canonnière opposite Hôtel Ibis Genève Centre Nations. In 2013 the old 4 star Hôtel Grand Pré has been totally transformed inside and outside in the new Hôtel Ibis Genève Centre Nations with 216 rooms. It's not the closest hotel to the United Nations, but bus 8 brings you in minutes there. During check-in, ask for the free public transport pass within the canton of Geneva during your stay.

The new interior may arouse the impression of a luxury hotel, but this is style over substance. Entering our room 740, the familiar small-size budget room setup reveals itself: excellent bed, shower, Wi-Fi reception, flat screen television. No safe box, no minibar, no trouser press, etc. Only one towel per person and no paper tissues are available. Female guests might find this to economical.

On the ground floor, the lobby doubles as the breakfast room and bar. We enjoyed the small terrace outside. The breakfast is good but limited in choice. The budget philosophy shines through here once again. Staff members are friendly and helpful.

We enjoyed staying in Hôtel Ibis Genève Centre Nations, although for its price of 126 euros including breakfast many European cities offer a better hotel experience. In Geneva, it's an affordable modern budget hotel.
