Warm at night in Hotel de Glace May 06, 2012
I had a Once-in-a-Lifetime chance to stay in Hotel de Glace for my birthday recently. What an experience. You would think staying in a place that stay between -5C to -3C would make you shiver at night, but quite the opposite.
The hotel is about 3 hours north of Montreal, so either take the drive and experience the country side, or take an airplane.
When you first arrive, all you see is a warm building, which is where the gift shop and registration is. We were given the "run-down" on the hotel, and given a time for our sleeping demonstration.
There are two sections, a warm and a cold section of the hotel. The warm part is where you take a shower, keep your bags, etc. The cold section is the part you'll love.
The hotel has 36 rooms, of which 15 are suites. Each suite has it's own design. From bears to Indians to Man and Woman. It is amazing. And until 8:00pm, you are able to take a look at everybody else room. I never stayed in the suite, I stayed in a basic room. The experience was still amazing.
From 8-9pm, all the visitors are kicked out, and the guests can go to the warm part to get changed, jump in the hot tubs, or get a few drinks at the Ice Bar. An entire bar out of ice!
The Ice Bar is also a wonderful place to go. Being made completely of ice and snow, you can enjoy a drink in a cup that's completely ice. Being a cold, windy, chilly Thursday night, many guests made their way to the hot tub and sauna.
There are toilets, but not always in the best place. In the hotel are rows of rooms, and at the end of each row was a port-a-potty, with a heating lamp inside. It was stocked, but still. At one end of the hotel was the warm section with toilets and shower that were warm and had lights. Not all rooms are close to the warm section, so therefore my closest toilet was the port-a-potty. Just make sure you use the facilities before bed.
The hot tubs are outside, along with the sauna. It's suggested that you take sandals with you, otherwise you'll get stuck walking on the snow back and forth from the showers to the hot tub bare footed. The hotel supplies the towels, bath robes, sleeping bags, etc. You are NOT allowed to take the wet towels and bath robes with you back to your room. They will freeze to the fixtures and forever remain a part of the hotel, until it melts again in the warmer weather.
Not once did I get cold while sleeping at night. They taught us the correct way to keep warm, and the tips worked! In the room, they light a candle to help get rid of the moisture in the room. There are also vents in the room to help the moisture to rise. Because it's an igloo, it can warmer inside then outside from the wind.
Just take a look at the pictures I posted and you can see the beauty of this place.
I highly recommend this hotel to everyone. And you wont be cold!
