Hotel am See Eschenbach in der Oberpfalz Reviews
English-friendly hotel with lake view just 15 minutes from Grafenwöhr Nov 10, 2008
Alexander Hubmann runs a great hotel on a small lake just 15 minutes from Grafenwöhr/Grafenwoeher Military Training Area. This place is quaint and rustic, but it definitely also has a romanitc feel to it. Although I was given one of the small single rooms while in the area on business, one of my collegues brought his Okinawan wife and they extended at Hotel am See through the weekend following our business trip in one of the larger rooms in the newer of the two buildings.
The owner is very freindly and accomodating--he also speaks very good English. They serve the best Czech beers and the food is delicious! I really enjoyed the after-dinner cinnamon liqueur "digestive" they served, and they had a few French wines as well. The ice cream, apple strudel and Black Forest Schwarzwald-Kirsch Ice Cream sundae were all very tasty. The breakfast/Früstück buffet is large and even has some hot food. The nearby lake makes a good running course of about 20-30 minutes for a nice workout after all the sweets the night prior.
My bed was a bit soft for my taste but it was warm and comfy. The shower was a bit small but the bathroom was nicely tiled in marble, clean and bright. The stocked refridgerator with "pay as you go" Czech beer and soft drinks was also a plus. I think they even have a microwave for your room to borrow. the large flat-screen TV and small Ikea-type closet was also a plus.
The only drawback I had was a "running waterfall sound" in the old radiator-style heating pipes at 0200 that woke me up the first night. Either it was a fluke or I just got used to it because it only disturbed my sleep the first night. The place seems to be very old in the original building (see photos with colored art-carved half-timber rafters) but the new building is more modern with the same view.
I would definitely recommend staying here if you have business in Grafenwöhr which is an easy 15 minute drive once you figure out the backraods route off the main highway (HWY 470).
Eschenbach and the Rußweiher Lake are typical Bavarian areas of Germany, which are quite attractive with the church architecture and lakeside villas dotting the shoreline. The entire area is romantic and rustic, including a cobblestone "downtown" shopping area of Eschenbach.
