Hotel Yassy Turkistan Reviews
Yet another Soviet hotel Aug 04, 2010
The Yassy Hotel is a Soviet style hotel within easy walking distance of Turkistan's sole attraction, the Yasau Mausoleum. Like any other former state run Soviet hotel, quality, cleanliness and service leaves a lot to be desired, but this place is actually quite decent value. Some of the rooms have stupendous views of the mausoleum from the balcony.
When I was here the place was being refurbished and they only had a few rooms available. Possibly this was the reason why the rates (excluding breakfast) were reduced and they were charging the same as the sole budget hotel in Turkistan. However, whereas the budget hotel (Hotel Sabina) has shared bathrooms with squat toilets, the Yassy offered a room with A/C and private bathroom for the same price, so that choice was easily made.
Staff was fairly indifferent (I wouldn't want to say unfriendly) but that is no change from any other Soviet hotel I have stayed at. At least one receptionist speaks English, so that was already an advantage over many other hotels in the region.
If you're going to Turkistan I would recommend visiting it as a long day-trip from Shymkent, or as a stop on the way from Shymkent to Aralsk. But if you must stay here, then the Yassy is a decent option.
