A hotel with character that doesn't break your wallet... Apr 30, 2009
We were in San Francisco for a weekend and were looking for an "interesting" place to stay. I did some research on Internet and stumbled upon the Hotel Vertigo. This hotel is one of the group of hotels called "Personality Hotels" in San Francisco.
Hotel Vertigo is located on Sutter Street, west of the Union Square area. It has changed its name from "York Hotel", and some rooms are still being renovated (although I didn't notice any sight/noise of renovation). We stayed in one of the renovated rooms. The most noticeable thing about this little hotel is its bright, contemporary decor. You stepped into the lobby, and the first thing that jumped into your sight is stylish orange chairs against the white wall. There's a small monitor in the lobby, playing the Hitchcock movie "Vertigo". The orange & white color scheme continues into the guest rooms. The room is not big, but well-appointed and VERY clean. There is no food service on the premises (except self-service morning coffee in the lobby), but Union Square is within a walking distance, and there are plenty of cafes and restaurants along the way. We paid about $110 for a double-double room; we didn't think it was a bad deal for a hotel in downtown San Francisco. I'd love to go back there again, and I am also curious about other Personality Hotels in the area. Hotel Vertigo is indeed a hotel with "personality", and we enjoyed our stay there very much. They charge $35+tax for valet parking. There are other garages nearby; they may be less expensive. Oh, and a little store next door sells good gelato! :)
The staircase - it DOES give you…
