The Grand Uzbekistan Hotel May 18, 2014
As the name implies, this hotel wants to be the quintessential hotel of the country. Perhaps you have seen the movie The Grand Budapest Hotel? That was the idea. It was stamped out of the ground in the sixties after Tashkent was devastated by an earthquake and it is located right in the city center, right next to the presidential palace, so you can imagine the pride and significance that the Uzbeks attach to this place. We were here twice. The second time, a large number of international sports teams were housed in the hotel.

For all that, it is a rather ugly concrete colossus, in the architectural style of a Las Vegas hotel. Soviet building practices valued fast and hard work, with nuts and bolts missing afterwards, so I expected the rooms themselves to be of questionable quality with bad plumbing, but actually our room was good, with working air conditioning and hot water.

The lobby and the staff make a professional appearance. Paying the room by credit card is even a prerequisite. There is also an exchange office inside the lobby, but the hotel staff will actually advice you to exchange money elsewhere, because the rate is quite bad. The breakfast room is very big and I suppose it doubles as a wedding room. There are also two cafés in the lobby with western candy bars, but unfortunately people still smoke here.

All considered, because of its central location and its good rooms and roomy lobby, I thought that this was a great place from which to start your exploration of the city. And if you’re lucky, you get a great view of the city.
