Thilanka Hotel Aug 29, 2010
Thilanka Hotel is a quaint colonial style hotel situated uphill with a central location neighbouring to the Tooth Relic Temple and Kandyan Cultural Centre.
Check in was smooth, and welcome drinks were served. The welcome drink is chilled Watermelon Juice, we have never tasted anything so refreshing!
The porter assists us with our luggage and while walking to our room, we pass by the restaurant and the pool. The view is fantastic, overlooking Kandy town and the lake. The elevator is rather tired looking though.
Our room is on the 3rd floor and when we walk in, we were pleasantly surprise to see that it is rather spacious. However the moment I walked into the bathroom, my face went blank… it is really very basic. Huge bathroom but it’s so basic, somehow it did not fit into the picture. Our balcony overlook the Kandy town and lake, nice view. There is a sign on our balcony door that advise us to keep the door close when we are not in the room as the monkeys might come and visit us in the room. ;) The lock on our balcony door doesn’t work. So we did not dare leave any valuables in the room when we go out. We informed the reception about it before we went out to watch the Kandyan show and they send someone up to check. When we got back, the lock is still in the same condition. Since we are only staying a night I didn’t even bother too much about going down and ask to change room.
We decided to have dinner at the hotel after a long day. They have buffet dinner for LKR 950 nett. All I could say, it’s not worth paying for, the food is lousy. Even the a la minute Hopper did not appeal to me. We had breakfast the next morning, it’s not great but it’s edible. My highlight for breakfast is the monkeys. They came by for breakfast too. They usually hang around on the roof and we threw the bananas that we took from the buffet counter to feed them. The staff at the hotel did mentioned that they themselves feed the monkeys too.
The best part of this hotel is the location, the view and the staff are friendly & lovely.

First impression arriving at Kandy: what a lovely city. The lake, the mountains, just beautiful.
Our hotel, Thilanka Hotel (***), situated up-hill was only a minutes walk away from the Temple of the Tooth, the most imported site of Kandy. We were staying here for 3 nights.
We were welcomed with a cold towel and a drink. The hotel reception has a very nice, colonial, atmosphere. We were staying in (room 802) the so called new rooms, with a great view on the lake. Very spacious room with a balcony. Complimentary tea and coffee facilities, mini bar, mosquito repellent appliance.
Bathroom: well, very basic….
The view from the pool (a little cold, but very refreshing) was just great. Friendly pool attendant providing beds and towels.
We had our New Year’s Eve dinner in this hotel, very disappointing (see my blog). Because of this (we did complain!) the management of the hotel offered drinks the next day. Very nice bar, drinks with appetizers. Well, at least they tried to make it up!
Breakfast and dinner (both buffet style) were ‘so-so’. Staff very friendly!!
The hotel has its own Ayurveda Spa. This building is situated in the garden and somewhat difficult to reach (not suitable for people who have difficulties walking). We had an Ayurvedic Body Massage (Head to Toe). Being pampered for 60 minutes. Price: Rps 3,500 (about 20 euro). Very relaxing, getting back your ‘baby-skin’ :-) Absolutely recommended :-)

Another thing: we were told in advance that people in town might come up to us and say ‘I know you from Thilanka hotel, I’m working there, yesterday you were sitting ‘there & there’ for dinner, wearing a ‘so coloured shirt’ (which would be true). And then asking for money to visit a sick family member (‘I’ll pay you back tonight’). Which of course is a trap……
And, a guy did approach us!!! Like more fellow hotel guests we talked to. So better be warned!
