A very nice hotel in the center of Zurich May 07, 2010
When we landed in Zurich and asked from tourists info office they recommended this hotel but for a budget traveler it was not a good option We marked the hotel on the map and came out of the Zurich train station opened the map and there was a one and a half hour walk tour highlighted with green route and starting point as Tram station across the bridge. We started walking on the route and looking for some budget accommodation but after 30 mins of wandering around gave up and started moving towards the hotel recommended by tour info guy. It was hardly five mins away by walk but a climb from thye point where we were looking for an accommodation. And the backpack was getting heavier and heavier with the passage of time as we we were on move that too on train for last 26 hrs with small stops in some cities and it was even worse when some body regretted regarding the accommodation.

The hotel was quite near to the old town or the main city attractions. We went to the reception and there was cute lady, with a wonderful speech. We asked her about the room and she gave us the two options. it was a double bed room on the 3rd floor but with shared washrooms. As we had no other option so we took the card of the room and went up on the elevator. Though the room was superb, everything was very clean and a nice bedding but with a window opening towards the side of the hotel with a building in front. But my father was in the opinion to get a room with a window on front side of the hotel so we went down and asked the lady for the desired room and she was very sweet enough to change the room without any cross questioning. We asked her name and she replied Muhammad, well that was strange as this was a Muslim name. We inquired and she replied that she was married t an Egyptian who worked with her in the hotel and he gave her this name. Anyways we thanked her and moved tour never room. This room was again very spacious with clean bedding and towels. A wash basin was also provided in the room and it had a big window at its one side. Wifi in the hotel was also good

After freshening up our selves we decided to move around the city and came down at the reception for asking about any restriction of hotel timings. Here it was an interesting scenario we witness. Muhammad at the reception was trying to explain two old ladies to move around the city. Muhammad was not very fluent in English but we liked her accent a lot, she just had to explain some restaurant on the map and she explained in a vey cute manner. “We are here, and move towards right and walk walk walk(moving her fingers on the map) when reach the tram station, turn left and walk walk walk, then get into the street and again walk walk walk and you will see the place on your right side. ” After she was done the old ladies looked at each other and the 1 km long walk and decided not to go to the restaurant and better stay in their room. We just moved a bit to see the map and the location she was trying to explain was hardly 100 meters from the hotel. There were stairs 10 meters away from hotel going down the street and the place was one street across. And we had a smile on our faces.

But we realized later on that she was being helpful to them just for their safety and the expression she had while she was explaining the map was simply awesome. We asked her about a Muslim restaurant in town and there she started again the same tale as she told to the ladies and we didn’t stop her and enjoyed her innocence. Anyways we came out took a shortcut and went down the street and easily located an Indian and Arabic Restaurant.

Besides, this hotel had two shared bathrooms on the third floor and they were super clean as if they have never been used and quite spacious. I had a great sleep and beds were extremely comfortable and i never knew when i slept and when i got up.

Next morning we were given a nice buffet breakfast and we were amused to see so many guest in the hotel as it was super quiet by night as if nobody was there at night and fully packed at the breakfast tables in the morning. Overall it is a highly recommended hotel provided you are not a budget traveler.

Reasonable for Zurich Nov 01, 2007
After finding a ridiculously low airfare to Zurich in the Fall of 2007, I decided that it would be a nice place for a long weekend. I had never been to Switzerland and its reputation for being a very expensive destination kept me away. But I figured in the off-season I could do it. However, finding a place that I could afford was quite difficult. Travel sites and guidebooks mentioned the same few budget options which were booked. Then after much internet searching, I came across the Hotel St. Josef, a 3 star hotel very near the train station on a quiet street. The hotel was very modern and clean. They had rooms with bathrooms which were quite pricey, but on the top floor they had rooms with facilities down the hall which were reasonable. The rooms were clean and functional. Kind of like a dorm. The bathrooms were immaculate. No need to worry there. The breakfasts were very nice as well. I'm not sure why this place is off the tourist radar, it is very close to the old town and just a five minute walk from the train station. If you find yourself in Zurich, and do not work for one of the many banks or jewelers in town, I suggest looking into this hotel.
