Hotel Spalenbrunnen Basel Reviews
Average hotel with decent location Feb 17, 2006
This is a small hotel with 24 rooms which is located in a building that dates back to the middle ages. The rooms themselves are fairly spacious with large windows and decent views of the streets below, but the room (at least the one I stayed in) was nothing fancy. The furnishings are quite basic and I had the impression that while it was kept in a clean condition, the bedding, towels and such were a little worse for wear and were in need of being replaced. The price is not all that bad for what you get - an average hotel for an average price.
The location, however, is a bit above average. It is located quite near the Spalentor (Spalen Gate), one of the three surviving gates of Basel that formed part of its fortifications in the 15th century. The Rhein river is just a few minutes walk, where many of the sights of Basel can be seen. In addition, there is a Tram line station located right outside the hotel also, which is convenient for getting around the city. There are plenty of shops and restaurants in this area, so you don't have to go far to find something to your liking. It's quite a pleasant area actually. The hotel itself has a restaurant also, but I didn't try it, although it did look fairly decent.
Just a small curiosity to add, and I wasn't sure whether to mention it, but this place contains a bar of sorts, I guess, in the basement. This is in a different location than the restaurant. There is a small billboard with pictures of beautiful women outside, so I wasn't sure just what this was all about, but I did not venture down there to find out. Generally, I'm not fond of bars in basements. I did hear some loud music coming from there at night, but I never did see anybody enter or leave. It did seem like an odd place for a bar with that kind of music too, and the hotel restaurant has a perfectly goo bar too to have a drink. As I said, this is just a curiosity, but thought I would mention it for completeness here.
The staff seemed nice enough and were helpful when needed. There are likely a fair number of better hotels as far as the rooms are concerned, but for location and some old world feeling, this hotel fulfills that requirement. With this said, as Basel is a rather small city, location is not such a big issue and has a lot of old world feeling in many places. Overall, an average hotel with a decent location and fair price. I did sort of enjoy the view of the Spalentor, however, from right outside the hotel during my comings and goings. That was nice! I have no reservations in recommending Hotel Spalenbrunnen for what it offers.
