Scandinavian hotel Sep 04, 2013
We arrive late at night at the Skanste Hotel which apparently had some sort of inspirations from Scandinavia - I must admit these Scandinavian features weren’t all that clear to me so I think this is just a standard low end of the market Latvian hotel.

The hotel location isn’t the best it is a bit away from the old town and the area look a bit industrial with some major constructions in the area. To be honest I didn’t spend enough time at the hotel to actually explore the neighborhood but first impression was a pretty boring industrial or semi-industrial area.

When we arrive at night the receptionist is friendly - but a bit strange. While he is checking us in he repeatedly says he is hoping for a quite night. Why does a receptionist hope for a quite night? Is it because the nights not always quite at this hotel? I wonder if the location of the hotel is significantly worse than I thought at first. Is this a bad neighborhood? Well I am too tired at night to consider this any more so we just head for the room. The room is facing the street which is always a cause for concern - will there be a lot of traffic noise during the night? Fortunately the street we are facing is a pretty quiet street and not many cars make it down this road at night time so I don’t notice any traffic noise - if there was a car or two going down the road.

The room is pretty basic with only a couple of single beds and a big old tube based television. There is a fridge as well but unless you actually have something inside you want cold you will be better off if you pull the plug to the fridge since it is pretty noisy. The shower is basic but it has got a glass shower which is sealed off from the rest of the room so you avoid all the water hitting the rest of the bathroom.

In the morning the breakfast is included. It is served in a pretty big room downstairs with a small buffet. One thing I noticed with this buffet was the absence of any kind of jam. Usually there is always jam at a buffet breakfast - but not this time. There is a bit of warm food with fried eggs and sausages. In addition to the warm food is a fairly big selection of cold meats and a bit of cheese. You see the influence of the German knights with the sausage tradition being left behind.

When leaving we ask at the reception how to get to the nearest bus stop since it is a bit too far to walk all the way to the center. They are helpful and explain the route - the receptionist explains the route using a map - but unfortunately the map isn’t free and we would have to pay a Lat to buy the map. This is a bit of a minus that the hotel hasn’t got a free map for tourist.

I have been in this structure from 22 to 25.07.2008. The hotel develops him on two floors and doesn't have elevator. The double room was very great, with refrigerator and television, the daily and accurate cleaning, only bother the nighttime mosquitos. The very kind personnel, available and speaks English. Enough the breakfast-buffet. Available and free Internet for the guests, inside garden and free parking . To 30 minutes walking from the old city, but to 300 meters they pass different bus. Advisable to young, or informal travellers that give importance to the substance and not to the form.
