Hotel Scharloo Willemstad Reviews
Taste the history of colonial Willemstad in a luxury but affordable way. Jan 08, 2011
So, you want to see the UNESCO World Heritage city center of Willemstad? You want to be close to everything in the center, including the beautiful pontoon bridge and the floating market? You want to park your car for free, you do not mind staying in the Curaçao-way and you certainly want to avoid those horrible tourist factories? And you hate to pay those ridiculous overpriced resorts? Then Hotel Scharloo is definitively something for you!
The hotel is located in one of the most impressive parts of the city, where beautiful, old historic mansions are being restored. The main building of the hotel is such a mansion itself. It is conveniently closely (approx. 5-minute walk) situated from the historic city center with nice restaurants and historic sites, and shops. The floating market can be seen from the premises.
The hotel offers a small parking for free, free WiFi, a nice patio with a tiny swimming pool. The rooms are brand new and offer a fridge, a cooling fan, and air conditioning. There is no television and keep in mind that real Curaçao houses do not have running HOT water. The shower only gives medium hot water, which is perfect for the type of weather on Curaçao.
The hotel offers a (rather expensive USD 35) airport shuttle. (Taking the bus for USD 0.50 pp is much cheaper). It can also arrange for rental cars.
Disadvantages of the hotel I encountered: located in a very narrow alley which (although perfectly safe) may frighten some people, the housekeeping forgot to service my room one day, the windows are made of the genuine wooden shutters which make the entry of mosquito’s easier than the double glass windows of the Hilton and Marriott factories, the breakfast offered by their website was not served, the parking fits only four cars so you need to plan your parking and be prepared to move your car once in a while. But hey, that’s the pleasant “laissez faire” way of life of Curaçao.
I can recommend this hotel to anyone who likes to stay in an authentic hotel that is close to the center and is clean and well maintained.
