Hotel Santo Cocktailbar Karlsruhe Reviews
Review Dec 13, 2008
About two years ago, the cocktail bar at the Santo was still an insider tip, but due to word-of-moth propaganda it got more and more famous. As a result, you have to book a table several days ahead for a Happy Hour day even if you are only two.
These Happy Hour days are the very special thing about that bar, because you get first class cocktails for half the price which means stuff like Caipirinha, Long Island Ice Tea, Cosmopolitan, Planter's Punch and other classic and non-standard cocktails for not more than € 4,50. At this point it is to mention that the bar staff is nearly too generous concerning the quantity of the cocktail itself and especially the alcohol. I remember a friend of mine having ordered a Zombie once. What he got was definitely not juice with a dash rum as one gets in other bars but rather rum with a dash of juice :-)
And concerning the taste: Just great. I have tried lots of their cocktails and there was only one I didn't find delicious - but that's a question of tastes anyway.
This Happy Hour is every Wednesday and Friday from 7 pm to 11 pm. As I already mentioned, they have a full house than and regrettably it's also very loud then.
On the other days, the bar is nearly deserted. That allows you to spend a relaxing or romantic evening (sometimes there's even live piano play) - you just have to accept that this evening could get quite costy then (that's why i didn't mark the location as "cheap"). However, from time to time one has to indulge in something - life's too short. Here, it's definitely possible with the choice between almost 100 cocktails, more than 50 kinds of whiskey and lots of other drinks. In addition, they serve different baguettes au gratin with mozarella and tomatoes, ham and cheese and salami and cheese. Besides, you can choose between different sauces to your baguette. Similar to the drinks, they all taste great.
The ambience there has something of the warmth of a local as well as the coolness of a modern bar and the classiness of a four star hotel. Anyway, you will feel at ease there as the staff is also very friendly and some with some of them you can chatter and frolic during the evening.
Last but not least, there is one thing you won't read in their website or anywhere else. It's the maybe most "intresting" regulars' table in the whole region. I won't tell anything, but try to book a table for a month's third friday. And being there, build rapport to the guy collecting all the empty glasses. Lateron, you will be rewarded as he is usually the one who hands out the free snacks and sweets around midnight :-)
Another insider tip: Try going there at one of the quiet days in the winter when it's snowing. And then choose one of the tables at the glass front. It's almost impossible to describe the peace that overcomes you then - at least it happened to me.
