budget hotel in Volos, Greece Nov 01, 2010
Volos, Greece’s fifth largest city (population 123.000), is a place where few tourists stop. The main interest of the place is that it acts as gateway to the Pilio peninsula with its outstanding abundant vegetation. It also has Greece’s third largest port.

If you are planning on staying in Volos, a good hotel to spend a night or two in is Hotel Roussas. Situated just at the Eastern edge of the city center it’s in walking distance to al the restaurants and bars but still quiet enough to have a good night sleep.

It’s not a luxury hotel. The rooms are just big enough and have a balcony with a small refrigerator and just enough space for two plastic chairs and a small table. The two rooms at the front have slightly larger balconies and a view worth seeing. The others look out over a narrow street.

The beds are very soft and comfortable. Remote controlled air conditioning is present as well as TV.

The bathrooms are ensuite and very nice but again, very small. If two people need to use the washbasin they’ll have to take turns.

There is no breakfast available and payment is cash only. One other downside is that smoking is allowed in the rooms so the cigarette smell lingers, in spite of air fresheners.

There is a small sitting room on the ground floor with a terrace overlooking the waterfront, good to enjoy a quiet drink before or after going out. Stay out of this room if you’re sensitive to cigarette smoke though.

The owners don’t come across as professionals but all in all it’s a nice place and good value for money. Some care is taken to keep the place clean. Advised for people travelling on a budget.

The entrance is in a side street of the waterfront street Nilokau Plastira. Follow the waterfront past the small old harbour. The hotel is one street from the hospital.

Rooms are around € 40,00 for a double. In the low season careful haggling might get you a discount.
