Basic but clean close to Bellavista Jul 25, 2011
Hotel Principado is well located east from the historic center in the rather quiet Providencia neighbourhood , surrounded by parks. The Bellavista quarter with its funicular to the Cerro San Cristobal is only a short walk away. The Santa Lucia hill and the historic center are also within walking distance (about 30 minutes to La Moneda) but if it would seem too far, the "Baquendano" metro stop is only a few steps away.

From the outside, the hotel looks nothing special and coming in from the street, the lobby is a bit outdated. The furniture and especially the sofas in the lounge area have seen better times. However with only a mere 11 degrees outside, the lobby was nice and warm!

At noon, our rooms weren't ready yet and we could leave our bags in the luggage room while our tour rep arranged a briefing in the breakfast room on the top floor. I was a little appaled to see that it hadn't been cleaned up yet after breakfast; but then again this was only an improvised space to have a meeting.

After the briefing, at about 1 PM, our room still wasn't finished. We were told it would take another hour but as we didn't want to waste too much time, we decided to head into the city. Upon our return at around 6PM, we managed to pick up our key without any problems.

We got the key to room nr 503, on the 5th floor and it turned out to be a real family room consisting of a large and spacious room with a double bed, a small yet functional bathroom and a smaller room with a single bed.

I loved the fact that my friend and I each had our room within the room and there's plenty of space to drop our bags.

Both rooms are heated but the heater in my room (the smaller one with the single bed) could not be adjusted as the controls have been broken. Luckily it never got cold at night.

The room had all necessary amenities including a tv and a minibar.

The bathroom was small, yet clean and featured a bath tub. With the chilly temperatures outside, I would have enjoyed a soak in the tub, but there was no plug to keep the water in. Unfortunately they couldn't provide this at the reception desk either, so I had to improvise with putting a plastic cup over the sink.

At night the room was fairly quiet but already early in the morning (around 6AM) it started to get very noisy. Later on it turned out that our room was right underneath the kitchen and next to the stairs towards the breakfast room.

Breakfast was served at the top floor and consisted of a small but nice buffet with breads, cereals, eggs, sausages, yogurts, fresh fruits and juices, cookies...

Despite the dirty breakfast room during yesterday's meeting, the space was really cleaned up now.

There's also a TV in the breakfast room which can be a little distracting but I found it useful to hear the weather forecast.

After breakfast we had to check out but we could leave our luggage again in the spacious luggage room downstairs.

I'd call the Principado a decent middle class hotel. It's a bit outdated but clean and all the necessary facilities were there. Combine this with the friendly staff, and it makes for a good place to stay over whilst in Santiago.
