Hotel Playa Costa Verde Holguin Reviews
Beautiful tropical resort with fine dining Nov 17, 2009
During our entire Cuban vacation we stayed at the all-inclusive resort Playa Costa Verde, located in the Pesquero bay. Tucked away behind a lagoon and luscious vegetation, and only a couple of hundred yards from the sea shore you'll find the resort, and what a magnificent resort it is.
The rooms are evenly spread over the large beautiful tropical grounds that are well maintained by numerous gardeners. Though there are plenty of rooms, it never felt crowded. Our air-conditioned room was large enough with two queen size beds, a dressing table, a mini-bar and lounge seats. On the dressing table coffee & tea facilities were placed as well as daily refreshed bottled water. Sliding doors with tinted glass to keep the heat out, led to the terrace/balcony.
The resort has a large pool area with swim-up bar and snack corner. On a walkway amidst the various pools, the animation team does its best to entertain you (and your kids, should you have any), with a variety of activities like yoga, water polo, aqua fitness and salsa lessons. All through the day, music boosts from the loudspeakers, often too loud for our taste. The animation staff was friendly and persuasive in their effort to let you join in on the fun, but never to a pushy point. Not once did we feel hassled.
The reputation of the food in resorts on Cuba is far from good, but Playa Costa Verde is a delicious exception to that rule. The main (buffet style) restaurant, with large smoking and non-smoking sections, offers a wide range of exotic and classic dishes with a daily changing theme. Three times a day you can eat all you want and as you like it. Besides the countless trays and buffets with cold cuts, salad bowls and hot plates (not to mention the desert buffet that is every chocoholics and sweet tooth's dream), three 'front cooking' stations are present. The ever so friendly staff behind the meat grill, the fish stall and the pasta/pizza bar will prepare your food to your specific needs and likings.
In the highly unlikely case you get bored with the buffet restaurant, the all-in package allows you to dine (max. three times per week) in one of the four a la carte restaurants. We enjoyed a touch of Italy in the Venetian and were offered superb service at the Conucu; a more traditional Cuban restaurant. We definitely recommend the Japanese place, where they put up an excellent show. We had a fantastic experience and were even invited to do some knife involving tricks ourselves. Everywhere, staff was swift, efficient and friendly. Be cautioned: you do need to make a reservation as the restaurants are fully booked every day of the week.
A 100 yard boardwalk takes you across the lagoon to the hotel beach. Though a bit small, the beach was clean and guarded. Except for placing a beach bed at the spot of your linking, there's no service at the beach. If you want a cocktail, you have to get off your butt and walk to the well stocked beach bar yourself. Light snacks are available there too. Next to the bar is the water sports desk.
Because of the resort's remote location (nearest town is at least 15km away) we were happy to find a few shops, booking agents for excursions and an Internet room in the spacious lobby, where you'll also find the main bar. Next to the lobby is the smoking salon, where original Cuban cigars are offered for an additional fee. We found the prices of the cigars were no more (or less) expensive then anywhere else on Cuba.
The beautiful grounds, the mouth-watering food and above all the attentive staff made our stay at Playa Costa Verde unforgettable. If you are not looking for a bustling city with buzzing nightlife, we highly recommend this place.
