Hotel Merryl is a budget hotel that is more 1 star rated than the 2 stars that they claim. Its advantages include proximity to the Gare du Nord train station, but it is at least 10-15 minutes’ walk away (almost 1 km) with luggage. It is located in a quiet area near the La Chapelle Metro station (about 3 minutes away).

What is shown in their website is nowhere close to the actual room we got. The rooms are old and musky. The beddings especially the comforters have stains and don’t seem to have been washed in months. At least the bathroom was clean and water pressure strong but the windows are too big and are only made non-transparent by an opaque stick-on film.

The staff at the check-in desk is curt and should take lessons in customer service. He is probably used to rowdy students and not more sophisticated travelers. He rang us 30 minutes before the arranged pick up time of the hotel transfers to insist that we be down 10 minutes before the agreed upon time. As the hotel elevator was the smallest I’ve seen for this trip in Europe (it can hardly fit me and a large suitcase comfortably), he didn’t even make an effort to help us bring down 4 pieces of luggage which easily took us almost 10 minutes to do so.

I would not recommend this place as it cost about 90 EUR per night and one could easily pay 20 EUR more and get a far better hotel in the center of town with breakfast included, not to mention friendlier staff.

A small place to stay in an international neighbourhood Sep 11, 2011
I found this relatively cheap Hotel Merryl online, booked it and kept it as a base camp for one week in Paris. Subway station La Chapelle around the corner and RER station Gare du Nord to the airport close as well. Montmartre (Sacre Coeur, cemetery, Moulin Rouge...) very close, easy to walk in 15 minutes.

The hotel is situated in an interesting international neighbourhood, not many palefaces like me around but plenty of cheap pizza and kebab places, coffee places, a shop at the same city block to get water, beer and other basic needs... the shop reminded Apu's shop (The Simpsons), it was a fun place to visit - every time there was something hassle going on which gave me the smile of the day. :D

Somebody might find the neighbourhood a bit scary but I don't have anything bad to say.

The room was a tiny twin room. Breakfast (coffee/tea/milk, 1 croissant/person, bread, yogurt...) was included. The breakfast was the reason why I chose this place, usually you don't find a hotel at this price including breakfast in Paris! Free WLAN works only in the lobby. Clean room, friendly staff (some temporary people at the reception time to time didn't know much about the place). Not much room for clothes and the toilet/shower was hardly big enough for one European. A small LCD TV in the room was okay but there was nothing to watch - about 30 channels only in French (they dub all English spoken programs). Some noise problems occurred (a snoring travel buddy, neighbours), not bad but I used ear plugs, my buddy did not.

My room was in the fourth floor. Usually, I used stairs because the lift was very tiny. But there is a lift though!

In my opinion, Hotel Merryl was worth money paid for. I might visit there next time.
