Hotel Maria Kolkata Reviews

During the summer of 2005, I spent eight weeks volunteering in Kolkata with the Missionaries of Charity. In the month of July, there were 1,000 volunteers from all over the world also volunteering with the MCs so accommodations can be kind of hard to come by. Hotel Maria is located on Sudder Street with all the other volunteer hostels in the "white" section of Kolkata so there are always intriguing people to meet. Hotel Maria has several (seven or so) private bedrooms with Western toilets, several private single rooms with a communal bathroom, and one large dormitory. As this is a volunteer "hot spot" there are lots of cheap restaurants surrounding the hotel with both Indian and Continental food (JoJos, Blue Sky Cafe, and the Korean roadstand outside) as well as internet and vacation help (Rajs). The hotel offers three computers with internet for pay and a pay phone. They also have a cooler with well-priced water (probably the greatest part of living in a 100+ degree heat). The staff, Ahmed and his associates, speak English and are willing to help you out if you need directions or a taxi (such as to the airport). The rooms are nice with (pretty consistent) electricity, but do not have hot water (you do not need hot water) or air conditioning. The mattresses are fine, but the pillows are awful...so maybe bring your own. If you are faint of heart and don't "do nature," you may be hesitant to stay here (or in India, for that matter) as we did find some rat poop in our room and often saw (large) cockroaches crawling about. Each room also comes with a plastic bucket for you to do laundry in (one of my most vivid memories was rinsing and wringing our clothes on the roof of the hotel as the sun set over Kolkata), Also, we left and went to Darjeeling for a week and we felt comfortable leaving our stuff in our room for the week we were gone. The locks on the door are slide=locks with padlocks which is great unless you lose the key.The room ran about $7.50 a night or $2.50 USD/night per person so it was perfect for us and for anyone who is anticipating being a long-term volunteer.

Hello, I´m looking for a place to stay three weeks and this place could be a good option. Do you have any email address or maybe you know how I can contact with them?

Thank you!
