Self conscious, colonial style hotel in between modern buildings Oct 21, 2010
Admitted. This is not a cheap hotel. I know the history and I know what I should think of it, and I do (see my blog). But as a treveller... the building, the interior, the rooms, the service, it all made me feel like in times that travelling was still written with a capital T. Raffles' style.

The rooms are positioned on two floors along rectangular inner courts, with beautiful plants and gardening. They have been furnished and decorated colonial style. Bathrooms enormous, old fashioned but very comfortable. Beds are high, and very comfy too. Fan and airco. Confy while setting the temp at 25-26 degrees so that you don't get the in-and-out airco blow. Spacious desk in a separate sitting part in the front of the room, plenty of closet room.

Location: right in the center of Surabaya. On 5 minutes walk from big modern malls, and plenty of eating places around.

Breakfast: very good choices between continental or indonesian breakfast. Orange juice is really orange juice here and coffee really coffee;

Service: friendly service, smiles all around; some of the staff even speak Dutch.

Pool: I lacked the time to use it, but it looks clean, nice and a great place to relax.

All I can say is that I loved to stay here. I will come back some day...

This is the hotel with a character! Nov 07, 2010
I love staying at this hotel because it is just packed with history. The hotel was first built in 1910 and has changed names and owners many times.

It was first named 'Hotel Oranje' (meaning Orange Hotel) after a royal Dutch family. Then, during the World War II, the Japanese was occupying many of the Southeast Asian regions, including Surabaya East Java, and soon took over the hotel. The hotel then changed its name to 'Hotel Yamato'. Not long after WW 2nd was over, the hotel changed name again: 'Hotel Merdeka' (the Liberty Hotel'). In 1946, the hotel was called 'Hotel Lucas Martin Sarkies' after the original founder/designer of the hotel back in 1910. Sarkies was an Armenian immigrant famous for his building architecture ideas in the Southeast Asian regions, especially in Singapore. In 1969, the hotel changed name to 'Hotel Mojopahit' after a large ancient kingdom in Indonesia. And, the story is not finished. In 1996 the Mandarin Hotel group acquired the hotel and changed its name into 'Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Majapahit'.

Now, the story is almost finished. Since 2006 the hotel is called Hotel Majapahit.

I loved the colonial and art deco style this hotel retained. The hotel was absolutely charming. The room was large, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent (coffee was especially divine!). Swimming pool was wonderful. The walk to the pool was very pleasing to the eye because of all the decorations along the walkway that represent balance of life and the elements of nature. Beautiful water fountains, natural stones on the sidewalk, captured lights in every corner, and tall bamboo and palm trees. It was all very relaxing. I was definitely sold!

Historical Hotel Oct 28, 2010
Just located facing the Tunjungan Plaza Mall,it is one of the important historical buildings in Indonesia. Formerly named Oranje hotel, and here ever Indonesian national struggle against colonialism. Nuance of the original building still remains Dutch, with not too many floors. Widely visible from the outside, but inside it has a very beautiful garden, which is the yard of each room. The bathroom is very elegant, and distinct from the hotel in general, it is located at the back side of the room. A complete restaurant's menu and delicious food in this hotel. Those who love classical buildings of Europe, especially Dutch in the past, must stay here.
