Very friendly family :)

Azziz is the best guide in the middle-east of Turkey and Ferrida is cooking as a goddess !

The house is very close to the city center in a very calm street.

A unique introduction to Kurdish family and life at Lizbon Guest House. Aug 27, 2009
I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to stay at the Lizbon Guest House (Hotel Lizbon Konuk Evi Guest House to give its full name) with its husband and wife owners Aziz and Farida. It is their home and, though it be a cliché, here it’s true, you will feel a part of their family during your stay. As his business card states cutely ‘We have really good intimacy [?!?]. Conversation amangs the tourists as if we were family that sense it is possible to say that it is verily better than any other kind of hotel’. Indeed Aziz ;)

By the time you reach Sanliurfa (Urfa) you are beginning to delve into Kurdish Turkey and Aziz and Farida are members of a Kurdish nomadic community. Both speak English well enough to communicate whatever you would need to know and most interestingly their histories, stories and insights into Kurdish culture, language and community / nomadic living. A rare opportunity as English is little spoken by the Kurdish communities the further East you head.

The hotel has about 4 rooms currently (more to come), to be taken as singles or doubles as you need. Mine had 2 beds in. Fan cooled and spacious. The communal bathroom is large with hot shower, sink, ‘Western’ style loo and squat-job too for those of you who like to travel ‘authentically’ ;) Cleanliness is fine and the communal courtyard is a wonderful place to relax with the grape vine roof providing shade. There is a computer with fast internet for about 2TL/ £0.80 per hour. Aziz, if you wish, can organise personally guided trips to nearby Harran or further off Mt.Nemrut Dagi though this will not be as cheap (of course) as doing things under your own steam.

Aziz’s current pricing is along these lines : for everything (room, breakfast AND home cooked dinner) 25 Turkish Lira/ £10 per person per night. If you only want breakfast 20TL/ £8 and if you only want a room then 15TL/ £6. I would strongly advise you to partake in and enjoy the dinners though as Farida lovingly prepares a different 2-3 course Kurdish meal everyday and it is delicious and another great little gateway into Kurdish culture and this little family. Diyar (one of their 30 grandchildren) joined and helped us during my stay.

Aziz and Farida had a smaller former Guesthouse called ‘Hospitality Guesthouse’ that I believe appears in Lonely Planet Turkey around the 2005 editions but after they upsized in property and changed their name the connection was lost and they do not appear in the current 2009 edition. Get your Backgammon playing skills to the fore and find them though! No one is disappointed with their time there.
