Hotel Le Manoir Barr Reviews
Perfect spot for a romantic getaway May 19, 2010
Hôtel Le Manoir calls itself 'residence of romanticism' and indeed it proved to sooth my romantic soul. This beautifully restored mansion, tucked away in Barr between the Alsace wine fields, dates back to 1924. The decoration of the hotel is in style with the building from the Belle époque era. Entering the hallway feels like going back in time. Not in the least due to the warmest and friendliest welcome at the tiny reception desk. Katia and Rolf run this lovely little hideaway with a great deal of passion and an eye for detail.
The hotel is especially suitable for lovers, couples and those in want of a romantic getaway. All you can do in the hotel is sleep and have breakfast :). Well, that and there is free internet access. But who needs the internet if you can have fun yourself :) The hotel has no dining room but, if you are able to drag your ass out of bed, dinner is available across the street. Your best option is 'Winestub Le Manoir', a quaint little restaurant run by the same family. Honest food by honest people for honest prices best describes the menu.
The hotel's location is excellent for exploring the surrounding area. Barr is a beautiful little village in its own right, and just one of the many cute villages along the wine route. It took us no more then a five minute walk to get the centre of town. The bikes rented at the reception desk (for € 10 per day) were too small for me, but I am a tall fellow.
In contrast to the large 'antique' rooms, the bathrooms are light and modern, fitted with all that we needed. Both our rooms were well cleaned and had ample storage space. Breakfast is served in buffet style. I especially enjoyed the freshly made fruit juices. Also, I was surprised by the wide variety of this 'continental' breakfast and by the personal touch. A friendly staff member came to our table to ask how we would like our eggs done. That sure beats picking a stale fried egg from a hot plate.
Overall the hotel is quiet; we didn't hear the main road that is beside the hotel. A little warning is in order here; if you get room 1 or 2, on the ground floor near the entrance, you can hear almost anyone come and go. The beautiful wooden floors have something to do with that as well. However, it is the only little down side I could find. Because, other than the squeaky doors and wooden floors, the hotel is as charming as the couple that runs it.
