Hotel La Tour Centrale Montreal Reviews
Good Price for a Good Location Aug 07, 2010
This hotel is in a very good location, right off a major street. It is about 5-10 minutes walk to many attractions, like Science Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chinatown, St. Mary Cathedral, underground shopping mall, etc. It is 2 blocks away from a shopping center, 1 block from St. Catherine Street, where there are many shops and restaurants. It has kitchenette, utensils, refrigerator. I was surprised to see plates, coffee cups, bowels, forks, and knifes in the kitchen cabinet. The price is good for its location.
But the bath tub is old, water is not running well in the shower, sudden hot or sudden cold...back and forth. The service is quite poor. We mistakenly flipped "Do Not Disturb" sign up when we left in the morning. When we were back late afternoon around 4pm, the room was not cleaned. I called to get new bath towels for shower and was told they would be delivered shortly. The "shortly" means basically more than 3 hours. If I had known the towels would not be delivered, I would have taken a short nap. At about 7pm, we went to the front desk asking them to have the room cleaned when we were out for dinner, but was told the cleaning people have already left and no one would clean the room. I was shocked to hear that our room would not be cleaned, not during the day not in the evening either. Apparently, we made a mistake putting a wrong sign on the door for the entire day. But when we asked to give us a new set of towels, no one ever delivered them as promised. When I asked to have the room cleaned at dinner time, I was told no one would clean the room. I have traveled so many places in the world and stayed at so many hotels, I have never heard that no one would clean the room in the evening when the room is not cleaned during the day. This is so frustrating.
Additionally, the parking lot they use is about 2 blocks away. The parking lot is basically used by daily commuters. From Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, literally there are no parking spaces for you to use. Luckily we arrived at the hotel on a Saturday, the lot was quite empty then. If you need your car during a week day, do not expect that you can find a space between 9am - 5pm. This is inconvenient, we ended up not bother visiting Mt. Royal since we only needed about half a day to go there and wanted to come back around noon time. We were concerned that we would not be able to find a parking space in the parking lot, which we have paid $16.5+tax/day. If you charge people this amount of money for a parking space, you should guarantee a parking space at anytime, right? It does not apply for this hotel and parking service they provide.
The Bistro on the first floor of the restaurant is not bad except a bit pricey compared with the food you get in the underground shopping center. The Chinese restaurant on the first floor is so so. We wanted to order dumplings with peanut sauce, the waiter told us that it was not a good idea since peanut sauce would fill you up. We still ordered it, there were 6 wantons covered by peanut sauce in a small plate. After finishing up the small amount of wantons, we hardly felt that we had even ate a thing. Not sure why the waiter told us it is not a good idea to order the dumplings with peanut sauce. Plus, they are wantons not dumplings.
The noise coming outside of this hotel is incredible loud. There were constructions in the city and there was noise from possible nearby dumpsters in the early morning. We had to close the window tightly to avoid the noises. We stayed in downtown New York near Time Sqaure once, we hardly heard any noise. But this hotel is really getting so much noises in that location with the constructions all over the places.
I would say there are three good things about this hotel (1) it gives you kitchen, refrigerator, etc. for you to cook. (2) The location is superb and (3) the price is "cheaper" compared with other hotels nearby.
