Old family hotel in the center Sep 04, 2014
We get dropped off by the bus from Montenegro down at the center of the city of Shkoder - it turns out the location they drop us off is quite convenient since the Kaduku Hotel is located right next to the bus stop. Hence it only takes us a couple of minutes to walk from the bus to the hotel. The receptionist actually speaks English fluently so it is easy to check in and get our rooms. We had booked a standard room but apparently the hotel is pretty empty so the superior rooms in the old main building are free so we get one of those.

The hotel is a family run hotel owned by the Kaduku family - the grandfather of the current owner was the very first dentist in Shkoder back in the days and his father was also a dentist - the same goes for his older brother. But back during the communist day’s two people of the same family wasn’t allowed to get the same education - hence the current owner had to study medicine instead so he became a doctor. Most of his family has left the country probably to make a better life in Italy and the USA but he and his wife is still living in Albania. They seem like a nice older couple unfortunately they don’t speak any English only French which I am not very familiar with.

Our room was on the first floor of the hotel and there is only about four rooms up there and a big common room which sort of looks like a dining room or living room of a private house. It is clear this place is old and hasn’t gone through much renovations for decades since the furniture’s in the room looks like something from before the second world war when the family probably had this hotel as their private house next door to the dentist office in the center of the city. Then one day they started this little hotel which now has expanded to include another building nearby. The furniture in the room is also quite old with a certain antiquated charm.

Unfortunately the charm comes with a price - the armchairs around the small table looks nice and charming - but they are quite uncomfortable to actually sit down in. so this superior room with the extra chairs really isn’t much of a bonus since you can’t really sit in the armchairs. At least the bed is fairly comfortable and the air-condition, toilet and shower actually do work.

In the morning there is a free breakfast included in the room rate. It is served in the basement under the hotel. The breakfast room is quite interesting down here in the basement and the breakfast is pretty substantial with your choice of tea or coffee to get the day going.

Leaving the hotel by bus is almost as easy as the arrival - we just have to go down to the main central square in the town next to the hotel from where the buses leave every hour to Tirana.

Fantastic Location Sep 04, 2014
The location is fantastic, right at the city centre (public square) and within all sights in Shkoder and price is cheap compare with other hotel we stayed previously in Balkan country and this is advertise as local hotel with history on it.

It cost €35 per night for two people with breakfast and we booked it through

The bus stop from Montenegoro is right in front of the hotel street (public square) and the hotel building and sign is visible from the bus, so we just walk there and save money on taxi. And the next day when we go to Tirana, the bus stop is opposite the street of the hotel – which is handy.

The young male reception speaks English well and our room was ready. The room located at the second floor of the building where the reception located (it appears the hotel has expand it is size and has different building nearby). The room itself is small in size with one double bed, a couple of chairs, small table and very old cupboard. The first window face the front of the street of the hotel, toward the bank building next door and the other window face a bit of greenery. I smell cigarette inside the room – even though we requested a non smoking room and the window was open. After closing the window and turn on air condition and leave it for a while luckily the cigarette smell disappear.

I found the bathroom is quite small and a bit tricky to walk to the toilet especially there is a bidet in between the hand basin and the toilet (without a bidet it would be much more spacious and we did not use a bidet). Luckily the shower has a proper glass and tub on it so the floor stay dry after shower and plenty of towels here. It was very quiet at night time and we sleep well here. Wifi is free in the entire building.

We booked a taxi from the hotel to go to the fortress which cost €10 and the driver wait for us in the fortress (probably around one hour) and then take us back to the hotel. The driver did not speak much English but the hotel reception already told him everything and he is very polite – opening and closing the car door for us. We plan to go to Macedonia with his car and him, but he quote a bit expensive for our budget which we declined.

In the late afternoon, the new reception comes and she tell stories of the hotel which originally built by the great great grandfather of the current owner with the surname “Kaduku”, and he was the first dentist in Albania and the pictures of the family was in the lobby and around the hotel wall where our room located. The owner showed up and we had a brief chat since he only speaks local language and Germany. He and the wife are very friendly.

The next morning breakfast served at the restaurant in the basement, the entrance located just outside the hotel building. The staff only speak limited English and just served the food and tea or coffee. The breakfast was enough to fill in the tummy and it included omelette, bread, and juice, no fresh fruit unfortunately.

Hotel Kaduku May 01, 2014
In August 2010 we arrived in Shkoder without an accommodation booking, but we had read and heard about Hotel Kaduku, which seemed to be perfect for us.

So on arrival in the city we walked towards the square Sheshi Demokracia (former: Sheshi 5 Heronjte) and by chance I spotted the Hotel Kaduku somewhere in a courtyard.

They have double rooms for 50, 35 and 32 Euro per room. Payment in Euro seemed to be quite common here.

Our large double room cost 35 Euro and was actually a triple room. It was located on the top floor with a large terrace in front of it. The room was equipped with air conditioning, a TV set and a hair dryer. A basic breakfast was included in the price.

Although the rooms must have been much cheaper in the past, we still were very happy with the place and can highly recommend it.

Hotel Kaduku is situated in a coutyard area off the square Sheshi Demokracia (former: Sheshi 5 Heronjte). It can be found near the south eastern corner of the square, just behind the popular Hotel Rozafa.

Hotel in Shkoder Nov 26, 2010
After arriving in Albania by taxi ( long story ) the driver suggested this place to me saying it was cheap but nice. He was right, although I have found that accommodation in this part of the world is expensive in comparision to everything else.

This hotel is not anything special but the lady at reception could speak english which was very helpful. Since I was leaving the next day to bus it down to Tirane, its location was perfect as it was just across the road from where the buses stop. There seems to be no bus stations as such in Albania so you need to ask a local where to get the bus from, so to have someone to ask at the hotel was great. She even walked me over there in the morning!!

There is wifi but you need to be close to reception to get it. Breakfast was also included and served in a resturant down stairs from reception, it was basic but nice. There is a mosque located about 50 meters away so expect an early wake up from the call to prayer.

The cost was 32 Euro and if in Shkoder again I would most likely stay there a second time.
