Absolutely recommend this hotel. The food is magnificent, and the rooms are spacious, clean and well maintained.

The Hotel Hofdabrekka is just a few kilometres east of Vik in the very south. From a distance, it looks like a group of army barracks buildings, but the flapping "hotel" flags out front give you a clue that it's actually just that.

The gravel road is a couple of hundred metres and is decent enough. Lots of parking and reception (and all the other staff I came across) spoke English well. The rooms are laid out in 3 or 4 long, non-descript, red-metal roofed buildings around the main building that houses reception and the restaurant.

The room was a decent size with very basic but functional funiture. The furnishings look like they were just picked up at a local Ikea, but were brand new looking. The bed was comfy enough and had soft bedding, but the pillows were super-floppy and not very supportive. Basically, my head was lying on the mattress right through it. There were 2 twin beds pushed together instead of it being 1 actual double bed, and 2 separate sets of bedding.

Blackout curtains were a nice touch given the long daylight hours. The bathroom was basic but clean and functional with modern fixtures. The shower didn't look like much (just a curtain-closed off area in the corner), but it had a hand-held AND an overhead "rain" type shower head too. Very nice! The water got super-hot and was smoothly controlled. A little dark with basic lighting in the room and WC, but OK. Nothing fancy anywhere but it all worked. Wifi was free in the room, but was painfully slow. The in-room TV got 5 channels; all English. Coffee-maker in the room.

There were also Icelandic "hot pots" (hot tubs) out doors between the buildings but I didn't use them.

The on-site restaurant had good food, but was expensive by North American standards. Breakfast was included in the room-rate and consisted of basic cold cuts, eggs, cheese, porridge, bread and coffee/tea/juice. Service was very friendly and polite.

This hotel is worth the around $150/night price tag, but is nothing flashy. A comfortable traveller's hotel.

Hotel Hofdabrekka Overview

This lovely country hotel is ideally located for excursions to anywhere on Iceland's ruggedly beautiful south coast and Europe's largest glacier, Vatnajokull. RY1102 The hotel consists of a group of buildings clustered together. They are architecturally unremarkable, obviously built for practicality rather than looks to withstand some of the world's wildest weather. The restaurant is also noteable for its lovely views over the surrounding countryside from its huge windows. The lobby is small, but there is a large lounge adjoining it with plentiful seating. 62 Single rooms Double rooms Twin rooms Triple rooms Non-smoking rooms The rooms are medium sized and in very good condition. They are simple in style, but perfectly comfortable with lovely views. This hotel is located on one of the remotest stretches of Iceland's breathtaking southern coastline. It stands in front of beautiful steeply sloping fells overlooking miles of flat sandy wilderness out towards the distant sea. Countryside 5 kms to city centre 195 kms to the nearest airport (reykjavik)
