Hotel - Hof Bechtermunz Eltville Reviews
Aug 03, 2006
The Hotel Bechtermünz forms part of the Weingut Koegler in Eltville which also comprises of a large wine shop and restaurant.
The hotel is built in what was once the vineyards's barn and it's origin is plain from the exterior. This ancient building looks like it's basic design hasn't changed in hundreds of years and is totally in keeping with the surrounding buildings of the estate.
The olde worlde feel does not however extend into the rooms which are extremely modern in their design and construction. Using the original building as a starting block the rooms are spread out over two buildings and make excellent use of the space available. Spacious and (presumably) expensively furnished they are more in line with boutique hotels than the more rustic boarding houses you often get in rural Germany. Interestingly all the soaps and shampoos provided were made from extracts of wine as well!!
The hotel itself is not large - only ten rooms grouped around a small courtyard with the Vineyards shop doubling as the reception and the restaurant as the breakfast bar.
The restaurant is much more what you'd expect from a building of this age, tastefully decorating in a simple, traditional Germanic style. With the small number of rooms breakfast is inevitably a quiet leisurely affair with the usual spread of cereal and fruit juice along with a buffet of cold meat, cheese, eggs, pickles and bread, followed by either a pot of tea or coffee. Evening meals can be purchased from the restaurant itself and either eaten indoors or in the spacious beer garden if the weather permits.
If you're just after the Vineyards own wine this can be purchased from the large wine stand situated by the entrance with the house Riesling very reasonably priced. If a party books in advance you can also have a hosted wine tasting session and work your way through the wine menu!!
The staff and owners were friendly enough if somewhat more laid back in a rather un-German way which led to a slight mix up with the bills on our departure.
The price per room although perhaps more expensive than similarly located German hotels is not excessive compared to what you might expect to pay in some large cities on a tourist break. If you're travelling on a budget then there are other places in Eltville that can be rented cheaper but if you're looking for a bit of style and quiet comfort then this is certainly worth a try.
