A Good Place to Stay Near the Plaka May 31, 2007
Hermes Hotel
19 Apollonos Street, Athens 10557, Greece I stayed here as part of a tour with Contiki in June 2007. This was our first stay before a cruise. As for the company looking for a hotel to stay at that has good location. The Hermes certainly hit all those buttons. It is only a couple of streets away from Ermou (for shopping) and no more than 5 minutes walk from Syntagma Square and the main tourist streets of Plaka, but is far enough away to have little passing traffic at night. The reception area is bright and welcoming and the staff were all exceptionally friendly and courteous. The room was compact (OK - small!) but the bathroom was of a good size, very clean and everything worked fine. The only slight problem was that the shower screen did have a small gap that could result in a wet floor but it was OK if used with care. The bed was comfortable, the air con was effective and it was great having a small balcony overlooking the street. CNN was the only English TV channel but who goes to Athens for the TV? There is a lounge area behind reception with a large screen TV, internet PC and a number of books - a good place to chill out rather than spend time in the confines of the room. Breakfast was included in the room rate and was fine - if you are looking for a full cooked meal you would be disappointed but there were a good selection of cereals, cold meats, cheese, eggs, fruit, yoghurt, cakes and bread. For me the two most important things are that the coffee isn't too dreadful and that the food is continuously replenished and Hermes passed both tests. Overall, great value for money and I would certainly have no hesitation in returning. I would recommend for anyone wanting to staying near the Plaka area of Athens. I promptly checked out of the Acropolis House Hotel and lugged my bags over to Hotel Hermes just a few blocks away. This hotel was noticeably nicer and considering the prices Shannon and I will be paying for this hotel, it should be. I left my bags at reception and took the bus for the 45-minute journey to Athens… Shannon Arrives |
