Hotel Excelsior, Glebe North Sydney Reviews
Sep 18, 2007
This is a shabby-looking run-down place which seems to be more like a pub with a few rooms over it than a real hotel. It has a number of different events each week day; happy hour Mon-Fri 4.30-6.30pm, pub trivia on Tuesdays with cash prizes, beer giveaways and a $500 jackpot, free rump steak with every jug of Coopers beer ordered on Wednesdays, live music Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and 'Toss the Boss' on Sundays.
We came down for the Pub Trivia night which has hit hard times recently where it used to be an institution and heavily subscribed to. The quiz itself is average-to-above-averagely-difficult, with fun and unusual rounds, though the final cash prize questions are so random that you would have to come equipped with your saddest, nerdiest friend to win. However, it might be worth dusting off that friend and their tweed jacket since the cash prize is a roll-over so there are opportunities to win as much as $2-3000!
We also ate here, the food was excellent. You can't argue with an $8 steak that is so big it overlaps the edges of the plate, the chicken parmegiana looked delicious and I can personally vouch for the thai beef salad. Jugs of beer are also very cheap.
A word of warning however: the landlord is known for his rudeness and temper, which as long as taken with a pinch of salt and if not taken seriously should only add to the amusement of the evening. Otherwise prepare to be offended or make sure you're served by someone else.
